all the exact details, but somehow her father had ended up being the driver while two of his friends robbed a convenience storeâand one of them was armed. He swore he didnât know what they had planned to do, but the jury didnât believe him, and heâd been plucked from her life.
Mercedes, noting her friendâs sad face, slung her arm across her shoulders. âDance tonight for your daddy,â she whispered.
âThanks, girl,â Layla told Mercedes. âI got this now. Letâs do it.â

MERCEDES, Saturday, April 13 6 p.m.
â âShe thinks we have lost the wayâ . . . âand she is rather frightened.â â
âfrom Peter Pan
Miss Ginger clapped her hands together to get everyoneâs attention. âCircle up, guys. Itâs almost time.â She sat down on the floor between Zizi and Jillian. Justin, Mercedes noticed, had positioned himself between Layla and Jillian. Almost twenty-five young dancers between the ages of fourteen and seventeen joined the circle.
âI canât find the sash to my costume, Miss Ginger,â Tara Picassa whined.
Her twin sister, Tina, said, âYouâre sitting on it, silly.â The fourteen-year-olds were the youngest performers in the spring showcase, and they seemed to wear their nerves on their slender shoulders.
âOMG! What if I forget my dance?â Zizi cried out.
Mercedes shook her head. Who but Zizi would actually talk in text? She wasnât sure if Zizi was exaggerating like she usually did or if the stress was really getting to her.
âYou wonât, Zizi. Just relax, all of you,â Miss Ginger said in what the girls called her calming voice. âBreathe deeply. Silence. Breathe again.â
âHave you heard anything more about Diamond?â Elizabeth Flemming asked.
âNo, Lil Bit. I havenât. But I have faith in my prayers.â
Although she was fifteen, Elizabeth was pixie-tiny and looked like she was eleven or twelve. She couldnât have weighed more than eighty-five pounds. Everybody, including her teachers, called her Lil Bit.
Sheâs perfect for the part of Tinker Bell, Mercedes thought appraisingly.
âI feel all messed up inside,â Layla admitted to the group. Everyone seemed to nod in agreement.
âMaybe we should cancel the show,â Lil Bit suggested quietly. âIt doesnât seem right somehow.â
Miss Ginger looked carefully at the dancers circled around her. âIâm listening. Does anyone feel strongly about not dancing tonight?â
The group was silent for a moment, then Justin spoke up. âWeâre all sorta nervous, but we really donât know anything bad has happened.â
âDiamond might even show up in a few minutes, making crazy excuses about being late,â Zizi suggested.
âOr maybe she wonât,â Layla added ominously.
âStop that!â Mercedes cried out. âWe need to dance because Diamond would expect us to!â
âAre we all agreed?â Miss Ginger asked.
A quiet chorus of yeses responded.
âWeâre going to include Diamond in our prayer,â Miss Ginger said. âPraying is all Iâve been doing since I heard about her disappearance.â
âDo you think it will be on the news ?â Zizi said dramatically. âIâve never known anybody from an Amber Alert before. I think it would be cool to have your name used in an official police capacity.â
âChill, Zizi. The child who had Amber Alert named after her did not survive,â Miss Ginger explained, her tone serious.
âOh.â Zizi looked stricken. âI didnât know. Sorry.â
âIâm not sure if they will post an Amber Alert. Thereâs so much we just donât know at this point,â Miss Ginger told them.
Mercedes wrapped her arms around her head and squeezed. This was so hard!
âThis is not on you ,â Layla
