lose.â He paused. âWhen we get back to Spooksville I promise Iâll buy a fresh deck of cards.â
Cindy laughed softly. âWe donât play for money, so itâs not really gambling.â She stopped and looked around. âI wonder how the others are getting along.â
âI bet theyâre at the castle already.â
âDo you think theyâll defeat the evil wizard?â
Watch shook his head. âPan is not going to be able to storm into the castle and demand his kingdom back. The wizard will have guards, plenty of elementals that will have gone over to his side.â
Cindy was worried. âDo you think theyâll all be killed?â
âI think they need a good plan. I just hope Adam comes up with one before they come face to face with Klandor.â
A small voice spoke nearby.
âHello,â it said.
Cindy leapt to her feet. âWhoâs there?â
âWho are you?â the voice asked softly.
Cindy and Watch looked all around. âCome out and show yourself,â Cindy ordered.
âNo,â the voice said. âYou have to tell me who you are first.â
Cindy glanced anxiously at Watch, who simply shrugged. Cindy continued to scan the surrounding foliage, looking for a sign of their visitor.
âIâm Cindy,â she said finally. âThis is Watch. Who are you?â
âMy name is Sarshi.â
âWhere are you?â Cindy asked. âWhy canât we see you?â
âBecause I donât want you to see me.â Sarshi paused. âAre you human beings?â
âYes,â Cindy said. âWhat are you?â
âDonât you know?â
âNo,â Cindy said.
âDonât you want to guess?â
âWhy should we guess?â Watch asked.
âBecause if you guess right I might show myself to you.â
âYouâre an elf,â Cindy said.
âNo.â
âYouâre a leprechaun,â Watch said.
âNo. Guess again.â
âYouâre a fairy,â Cindy said.
Sarshi sounded disappointed. âHow did you guess?â
âWe were running out of names for elementals,â Watch said. âAre you really a fairy?â
âYes.â
âOh no,â Cindy moaned. âI donât know if I can take another spell right now.â
âI wonât cast a spell on you,â Sarshi said. âI donât want to hurt you.â
âWhy are you here?â Cindy asked.
âThere is a rumor in the woods that Pan has returned. Another fairy told me that he has come with human kids. When I saw you I thought you might be with Pan.â
âWe were with him,â Cindy explained. âBut Watch was shot in the leg by an elf, and I stayed behind to guard him. Pan has gone along with our other friends.â
âBe careful,â Watch warned in a quiet voice. âThis fairy might be on Klandorâs side.â
âI do not like Klandor,â Sarshi replied. âI never do a thing he says. I am on Panâs side.â
âBut if you follow Pan,â Cindy said, âhow come you didnât follow him into our world? Why are you still here?â
Sarshi was a long time in answering. âBecause these are my trees. This is my home. And I knew that one day Pan would return with an army and throw down Klandor.â
Cindy had to smile. âHe didnât bring much of an army Iâm afraid. Our other friends are all heâs got with him.â She paused. âI do believe you are a nice fairy, and Ihope you can tell weâre nice humans. Would you please show yourself now?â
âOK. But you have to promise not to laugh at me.â
âWhy would we laugh?â Cindy asked.
âBecause I am a kid fairy,â Sarshi said, and with those words a tiny female figure appeared beside Cindy. She was at most half Cindyâs height. Like the fairy they had met outside the dwarfsâ cave, she wore
