tapped directly into the issue of Minnesota pride. Only a traitor would prefer Southern Peach Cobbler to something from his or her home state.
âDo you think we should have some Minnesota Peach Cobbler at the reception?â Herb asked Lisa.
âThat would be wonderful, but Hannah might be too busy toâ¦â
âIâll do it,â Hannah promised, interrupting her partnerâs attempt to lighten the wedding workload. She was already making two kinds of cookie cakes, but sheâd gladly bake all the desserts for the buffet table if thatâs what Lisa and Herb wanted.
âCould you bake one for me tomorrow?â Jack Herman asked. âMarge is taking me in for my final dose of brain juice, and I want to give something nice to the nurses.â
âBrain juice is what Dad calls the drug cocktail they give him in the clinical trial,â Lisa explained, even though everyone had guessed what Jack meant.
âMy memory gets better after I take it, and thereâs only one drawback as far as I can tell.â
âWhatâs that?â Andrea asked.
âIt makes me remember all the dumb things I did before I took it.â
âThatâs ridiculous, Jack.â Marge was the first to defend him. âYour memory wasnât the best before. We all know that. But youâve never done anything dumb.â
âOh yes, I have. And itâs something Iâm probably going to regret for the rest of my life.â
Jack looked very serious and Hannah reached out to pat his arm. âIâm sure itâs not as bad as you think it is. Tell us about it and maybe we can help.â
âI donât think anyone can help. You canât un-ring a bell.â
âI know that one!â Tracey spoke up. âI heard a lawyer use it on Court TV, but the judge ruled against him.â
âWhat particular bell are you talking about?â Hannah asked, quite amazed that Lisaâs father was speaking figuratively. Before the clinical trial had begun, Jack had taken everything literally.
âI was so excited that Lisa and Herb were getting married, I invited someone who wasnât on Lisaâs guest list.â
âThatâs okay, Dad,â Lisa was quick to assure him. âThereâs always room for one moreâ¦right, Andrea?â
âAbsolutely,â Andrea responded with a smile. âDonât concern yourself for a second, Jack. St. Peterâs can seat over two hundred and I reserved the whole restaurant at the Lake Eden Inn for the buffet reception.â
âOh, I figured thereâd be room for one more at the church and the reception. Thatâs not the problem. Itâs justâ¦I donât think Lisa wants this person at her wedding.â
Lisa gave a merry little laugh. âI donât know who you could be talking about, Dad. I invited practically everyone in Lake Eden already.â
âNot this one. I checked the list.â
âReally?â Lisa frowned slightly. âWellâ¦if I forgot someone we know, itâs probably a good thing you remembered. I donât want to hurt anyoneâs feelings.â
Andrea set her laptop computer on the table, unzipped the carrying case, and powered it up. âReally, itâs no problem, Jack. Just let me pull up the file. This laptop comes in so handy. I absolutely couldnât live without it!â
Hannah just shook her head. Although there were things sheâd hate to lose, food and oxygen were the only two she absolutely couldnât live without.
âHere we are. I pulled up the guest list,â Andrea announced, after a symphony of important-sounding multi-toned beeps. âJust give me the name and Iâll add it. And then Iâll hand-deliver an invitation this afternoon.â
âOkay, if you say so.â Jack glanced at his daughter. âYouâre not going to like this.â
Lisa gave him a reassuring smile. âSure I am. One
