hand flew to her face. “What do you mean what’s wrong? I’m so embarrassed. I can’t believe you heard all that.”
“Don’t be embarrassed!” Trent said, taking a step closer that Dawn countered with a step back.
“No,” she said, holding out her hand to keep him at a distance. “Seriously, this is worse than that time in junior high when I walked around with a pad stuck to my foot for an entire afternoon.” She took a deep breath, rolling her eyes to the ceiling, wondering if her cheeks could get any hotter than they were right now. “Will you please erase it? And we can pretend this never happened?”
“No way,” Trent said, stuffing the phone into the pocket of his black pajama pants. “I’m keeping it to play for you on our one year anniversary and we’re both going to laugh our asses off.”
Dawn risked another look at his face, heart lifting at the tenderness in his expression. “You think?”
“I do. Because not only are you all those other great things I mentioned earlier; you’re funny as hell.” His gaze softened. “And I love you, too, by the way.”
“You do?” A slow, delicious-feeling smile crept across her face.
“Yeah.” He stepped closer, until she could smell the soapy, minty, ready-for-bed scent of him, an intimate smell she planned on getting used to. “So get on over here and give me some sugar.”
Dawn giggled. “Your Elvis voice needs some work.”
“Good thing I know a woman who can give me pointers.” Trent smiled as he leaned down to claim her lips.
Dawn sighed as their mouths met. She kissed Trent with all the love in her heart and all her hope for the future, her body heating up for reasons that had nothing to do with embarrassment.
That night, as they lay entwined in the one giant sleeping bag they’d made by zipping both their bags together, Dawn tried to stay awake for as long as she could, wanting to savor this first perfect night with the man she loved. But all too soon, sleep pulled at her eyes and she drifted off to dream of a future with one amazing man, three amazing kids, and a life spent loving the last person she’d ever suspected would be The One.
But then sometimes life surprises you.
    Thank goodness.

    About the Author
Jessie Evans gave up a career as an international woman of mystery (and traditionally published author) to write the sexy, contemporary Southern romances she had always wanted to read.
She's married to the man of her dreams, and together they're raising a few adorable, mischievous children in a tree house in the boonies. She grew up in rural Arkansas, spending summers running wild, being chewed by chiggers, and now appreciates her home in a chigger-free part of the world even more.
