in on this one from the start.â
Nathan closed the folder and tapped it against his knee. âYou were on your little hiatus when her case came in.â
âAnything interesting?â
âNot after the sitter confessed. Morgan, the mother, sheâs a lot like Lilly in a way.â
âHow?â
âJust her demeanor. Thereâs this toughness about Morgan Adams.â
âMaybe we should be worried sheâs packing. Considering the marksman your sweet wife is. I saw her outshoot Lee Watson on the range once.â
Nathan chuckled. âDonât say that in front of him when heâs with his SWAT guys. I wonât be responsible for what happens.â He grazed the folder with his fingers. âLillyâs the only woman I know who carries a concealed weapon.â
âYou know she could get the draw on you.â
âProbably.â
âNot probably. Absolutely. Next day offââ
âYeah, yeah, yeah. Youâre just hungry to get me knocked down a few. Iâm not working with SWAT for my marksmanship skills.â
Brett pushed his door open. âIâm glad you realize that.â
Nathan hopped out of the car and closed the door. âAs long as you appreciate the shortcomings of your character.â
Brett affected mock disdain. âMe. Iâm perfect.â
âMinus the ladiesâ man shiner youâre sporting today. Did you mistake a boyfriend for a brother again?â
âDoorknob.â
âWhatever.â Nathan stopped midpoint up the stairs. âDo you see these flower beds? I wonder if Adams is a closet landscaper. Iâve been looking for someone.â
âIâm sure heâs got loads of time between his doctoring and all to do your yard work.â
The Adamsâ residence was a refurbished historical Victorian home painted in vibrant colors. Brett thought a child might have had a hand in picking out the color scheme, or at least an adult that was infatuatedwith McDonaldâs. One half was orange-red painted brick, the other side a pale yellow and the top half a sunnier, deeper yellow. The pathway lights flickered on as the sun was swallowed by the Rocky Mountains.
Nathan smiled. âYou take the lead. You know more about the case than I do.â
Brettâs chest swelled with pride. He respected Nathan more than his ego would ever allow him to share. Lately, Nathan had chilled quite a bit. Wonder whatâs going on between him and Lilly to cause such a change? Maybe theyâre finally trying for a family . He rang the doorbell and pulled his credentials from his pocket.
The door opened to reveal a man, about six-foot-two, dressed in blue plaid flannel pajama bottoms and a white T-shirt. Brown hair. His eyelids narrowed over his dark blue eyes.
âDr. Tyler Adams?â Brett said.
Confusion swept over the manâs face as he nodded.
Behind him, a woman with long, curly blond hair and hesitant green eyes pulled a white terry cloth robe tighter around her slim waist. The nurse. Why did people look so different when they were out of their uniform? Brett flashed his badge. âIâm Detective Brett Sawyer.â He waved his hand Nathanâs direction. âMy partner, Detective Nathan Long. Weâre with Aurora police. Can we come in and ask a few questions?â
âWerenât you at the hospital today?â Morgan Adams asked Brett.
âYes, maâam. I was the one there from the police for Zoe Martin.â
She shook her head with a puzzled frown. âYou know I canât give you any medical information about her case. Youâd have to go through the public relations office for that.â
Her husband opened the door wider. âWhat is this regarding?â
Brett stepped closer to the door. âMrs. Adams is partly right. Itâs regarding the assault on Zoe Martin, but Iâm not here for any of her medical info.â
âWhy donât we step
