being all nervous, Iâll just smile and say, âSure,â like itâs no big deal, and follow him onto the dance floor andâ
Suddenly Rachel realized that Shane and Taylor had stopped talking. They were both staring at her. âUm, what?â she said, biting her lip. âSorry, Iâdid you say something?â
Shane fidgeted with his fork. âYeah, I justâno big deal, but I asked if you wanted to go to the dance withme? As friends. That way we wonât be the only ones without a date.â
A feeling of dread settled over Rachel. How could she say no? Shane was such a nice guy. She really didnât want to hurt his feelings. But Brodyâs face flashed through her mind, and she started to stammer, âUmâI donâtââ
âActually, Iâd love to go with you,â Taylor said to Shane, rescuing Rachel just in time. âYou know, Rachel might not even be allowed to go to the dance, and I was worried that I wouldnât have anyone to hang out with. I think weâll have an awesome time!â
Rachel flashed Taylor a grateful smile.
âOkay, Taylor,â Shane said. âSounds great.â
But Shaneâs smile didnât seem quite genuine, and Rachel knew that he could tell that she was going to say no. She didnât want Shane to feel totally rejected.
âShane, ordinarily I would definitely go with you,â Rachel said quickly. âItâs just thatâwell, this is top secret so donât tell anyone, but . . . Iâm kind of hoping to go to the dance with Brody.â
Shane looked shocked. âBrody?â he repeated. âYou and Brody ?â
Rachel was stung. She didnât know what to say. Is it really that hard to believe? she thought.
But Shane quickly corrected himself. âIâm just surprised because I had no idea that you even knew Brody,â he continued.
Rachel nodded. âYeah, weâve been in our church choir for years. I mean, we were in itâbefore Brody moved to California.â
âYou sing?â Now Shane looked even more surprised. âI didnât know that. How come youâre not in glee club?â
âBecauseâactually, never mind. Itâs not important. Besides, I get to sing a lot at church,â Rachel replied.
âAnd you and Brody are . . . friends?â Shane asked.
Rachel shrugged. âI guess. I mean, we were friendly. But just between usââ she leaned forward and lowered her voiceââIâve had a crush on him forever. I know itâs probably not going to matterââ
âWait a minute,â Shane said. âDo you think that youâre Brodyâs secret crush?â
Rachel didnât say anything, but the pink blush creeping over her face answered Shaneâs question.
âWow, Rach, I honestly had no idea that you like Brody. Thatâs so . . . you know what? I really hope that Brody likes you, too. Maybe you are his secretcrush!â Shane said genuinelyâand loudly. At least ten people nearby turned to stare at them! Rachel wished that she could dive under the cafeteria table and never be seen again. She bent down and rummaged around in her backpack like there was a secret treasure hidden there.
âShane!â Taylor hissed. âShut up!â
Shaneâs eyes grew wide. âOops, sorry, that was kind of loud,â he said in a quieter voice.
âI want to die,â Rachel moaned in a half whisper from under the table. âIâm so embarrassed.â
âRach, donât even worry about it,â Taylor said. âCome up. Nobodyâs even looking over here anymore. Honestly, I donât think that anyone was even paying attention.â
âThen why were they all staring at me?â Rachel demanded.
âNobody was staring. They just kind of . . . looked in this direction for a second,â Taylor replied, but Rachel
