talking about this,” he gestured down his body and up again, leading Amber’s eyes along his length in a way that instantly made a blush rise to her cheeks, “we were having a wild night when they took us, that’s all.”
He did that on purpose! It was hard to think otherwise when she found herself looking up into his grinning face. She was so busy trying to will the red away from her cheeks that it took a moment for what he’d said to fully sink in.
Sounds like one hell of a wild night if they were both naked! Wait a minute….
“There weren’t— I mean, you weren’t having sex at the time—”
Fador laughed again, turning and walking away, forcing her to follow or be left behind.
“No, nothing like that. It was stupid really. Anyway, there really isn’t a reason to worry about any of it. We’ll be escaping tonight.”
Amber was too relieved to hear there weren’t other women involved to pay much attention to the rest. Am I relieved they aren’t involved with anyone, or just relieved their women weren’t killed in front of them? It struck her that none of what he had just said actually meant they didn’t have someone waiting for them at home. Maybe it was just one of those ‘what if’ scenarios to them. What would you do if you were on a deserted island and no one would ever know what you’d done? She wondered why it mattered so much to her, but there was no getting around the fact that it did.
    “What will happen then?”
    “Hu?”
“When we get off the island. Any plans?”
The tree line opened up ahead of them and she finally had a view of the cove. The pale sand of the beach was littered with rocks, some quite large, and off to their left was a large formation of boulders. That was apparently their destination, because Fador made a beeline for it. When they approached, she saw there was actually a small cave formed by the rocks and inside sat Michael. He had already fashioned a spit and was working two sticks to make a fire.
“Plans? Well… we haven’t really had a chance to discuss that yet.”
“We as in you and Michael or we as in you and your woman?”
Fador stopped short, whirling around with a look Amber couldn’t quite place on his face. Somewhere between outrage and hurt.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Do you honestly think I’d have slept with you if there were someone else? No, don’t answer that.”
Fador wordlessly continued on to the surf, but Amber sat down on a rock beside Michael, frustration and regret churning in her stomach. I didn’t mean to insinuate…. But she could see now how he could take what she said the wrong way. She gave herself a few mental kicks in the ass, wishing she could take the last several minutes back . On the one hand, I guess that means he is single after all. Not that it matters now. She sat staring as Michael continued to work, and felt utterly miserable.
Michael, methodically rubbing the sticks together, finally produced not only smoke but a tiny flame as well. He put straw over it and blew gently, finally coaxing it into a fair sized fire.
Impressive. There was no way she would have been able to do it, and even after watching him do it she didn’t think for a second she would be able to do it herself.
Damn it Amber. Why’d you have to go and insult Fador like that? She was so caught up in her own thoughts she was startled when Michael intruded.
“He should be finished with that in a minute and we can start cooking it. You’ll like rabbit. Tastes just like… rabbit!” He gave her a playful grin, but it fell when he took in the look on her face.
By now, her stomach had churned and clenched until she wasn’t sure she could eat even if they really were as good as he claimed. They sat in silence a few moments, with Amber the first the break it.
“He told me about your escape plan.”
Michael turned a surprised look her way.
“Oh? What exactly did he tell you?”
Strange. What are they trying to hide? Why can’t
