see my lovely sister without a reason?â
She finished off her sandwich and washed it down with a gulp of soda. âNow Iâm really worried. What do you want?â
âA favor.â He took up a position opposite her, trying to keep his expression relaxed and friendly. âFor an old friend.â
Her smile disappeared. âWhat old friend?â
âSomeone you used to be best buddies with.â
âAlly Kendal?â
âSo you know sheâs back?â
âEveryone knows sheâs back.â Lauren pursed her lips. âWhat I want to know is what it has to do with you.â
Rob glanced around, but everyone else in the small kitchen appeared to be occupied. âShe needs a job.â
âSo?â
âI was hoping you had an opening.â
âEven if I did, why would I give it to her?â
âAs a favor to me?â
Laurenâs brown eyes flashed fire. âAlly dumped you. Why the hell would I want to help her?â
He met her furious gaze. âBecause I need her to stay around for a while.â
âSo you can what? Make things right with her?â
Rob thought quickly. âNo, so that I can clear up something thatâs been bothering me about Susanâs death.â
âSusan Evans?â Lauren studied him for a long moment. âLike I believe that.â
âItâs part of the reason. Ally was there that night, and no one got to talk to her. She might have evidence that will help me solve the case.â
âThe case was solved, Rob. Susan committed suicide.â Lauren turned on her heel and headed into the tiny cramped back office. Rob followed her and waited until she swung around to face him. âI still donât believe you.â
âI canât help that. But Ally really does need a job.â He met her gaze. âHell, I never ask you for anything, sis. Will you do this for me?â
She folded her arms over her chest. âThat bitch hurt you, Rob. She almost destroyed you.â
He shrugged. âIt was a long time ago. Iâve gotten over her.â
âDonât lie to me. Sure, you date lots of women, but youâve never allowed any of them to get close. I know because they come and complain to me about it all the time.â
â Okay. Part of me wants to have it out with her, make her tell me why the fuck she did what she did.â
She nodded slowly. âIâd like to hear Ally try and explain herself as well. Iâll give her a job. I need a new busboy since Joe left.â
Rob frowned and stood up. âIf youâre going to treat her like shit, Iâll go and find someone else to ask.â
âIâll treat her the same as any other new employee. I swear.â
Rob considered her carefully. âYou promise?â
Lauren smiled way too brightly. âSure.â
He wasnât convinced, but what else could he do? If Ally hated the job, sheâd quit soon enough. âNow, how am I going to get Ally to find out about the job without telling her?â
âEasy, put a flyer in her mailbox. Sheâll assume everyone got one with their junk mail and sheâll come over.â
âYou are a genius.â
Lauren sat down at her desk and typed away on her computer. âI already had something drafted for the ad, so here you go.â The printer rumbled into action, and she leaned across to retrieve the single sheet from the mouth of the printer and handed it to Rob.
The paper smelled like fried chicken, but Rob was okay with that. Heâd gotten used to his sister smelling the same way since sheâd taken over the diner three years earlier. âThanks, doll.â
She grimaced at him. âIâm not going out of my way to be nice to her, and if she gives me any trouble, sheâs out, just like anyone else.â
âTotally.â Rob hesitated. âBut give her a chance, Lauren, wonât you?â
âGod, Rob, what does that
