anything.”
“Fine.” Ruby muttered. She took Dirk from Darius and started heading towards the stairs without another word.
No one knew what to say after that. Ruby’s anger about this seemed it wouldn’t go away and maybe it never would. She hated it so much that none of us could really understand.

    Chapter 11

    Ruby

    Was I really alone here?
I was in my feelings at least and I just tried to forget about them for now. Dirk helped. He made me happy and watching how he’s grown had been the greatest pleasure. Motherhood was something I never thought I’d experience or enjoy this much. My son was everything to me and no matter the changes happening around us that would never change.
I sat up in my room on the floor with Dirk crawling around in front of me, trying to find his way to his feet. “Look at you. You really just want to get up and walk don’t you? Here. Stand up.”
I took one of his hands to help him balance on his feet and he smiled and giggled, bouncing with joy.
“Careful!” I laughed. “Don’t want to fall.”
Dirk stopped as if he was listening to my direction. It was the first time that I’ve really seen that. All this time it’s been Darius who was encouraging his walking since I was sensitive about him growing up but this seemed different. I felt excitement in being able to teach him something and he just continued to stand there like he was ready to listen.
“Take it slow.” I advised, slowly pushing my fingers from his little grasp. “One step at a time.” Dirk thrashed his arms, saving himself from falling and proudly stood on his feet alone. “There you go.” I moved myself back on the floor to get some space between us. “Now come to me.” I held out my hands and Dirk reached out his without moving. “Come on. You can do it. Walk.”
I was coming around to Dirk’s accomplishments and when he took his first solo step, my heart raced and my face became flushed.
Darius was suddenly next to me and joined me on the floor. “That’s it. You’re doing it. Come on.”
Dirk got a big smile on his face to see his father and took three more steps before falling in my arms. “You did it!” I tickled his sides to make him laugh. “You walked!”
“Get him to do it again.” Darius said.
He got up and sat himself on the floor away from us and I turned Dirk towards him. “You want to go get daddy?” Dirk giggled and swung his arms in the air. “Well, go get him.”
I made him steady on his feet and he walked all the steps he needed to get to Darius. “That’s my boy! You’re officially a walker!”
“I wouldn’t say that completely. He won’t be able to everywhere.”
“This is only the beginning. He’ll get there but I’m glad to see you not so depressed about it.”
I smiled and watched Dirk try to climb all over his father as he always does. “I know I won’t really be able to stop him from growing up. It’s just hard to believe that he’s done it so quickly.”
“I’m proud of him. He’s an amazing kid.”
“Of course he is. Look at his parents.”
Darius laughed. “I guess you’re right. His mother is the most amazing woman.”
I smiled and crawled towards them. “And it doesn’t hurt that his father is naturally brilliant at everything he touches.”
“Mmm. He sounds dreamy. I’d like to meet him.”
I just smiled to his humorous tone and leaned into his lips with my own. “Is this you trying to deny that you’re his father?”
“No. I just wanted you to admit you were talking about me.”
    “You know I was.”
We kissed and shared the moment together, watching our son play around on the floor and stand up on his own for a few steps before falling happily to his bottom and doing it again. It all seemed so perfect. Our lives were finally going in the same direction and we couldn’t ask for anything more.
