love you,” he said, so solemnly that she caught her breath. Elizabeth watched as the woman smiled. She sat up a little and kissed him. No word was necessary to describe her loving feelings.

The strange man’s hand slid slowly over his lover’s hips as she put her head back on his chest and sighed softly. He stared into the fireplace over her head until his breathing had returned to normal. His hand drew random patterns along her ass before he placed it on her waist. His fingers stretched out towards her belly button and for the first time, Elizabeth realised that her stomach was round and full. A beam lit up his expression before his gaze fell and his eyes stared unseeingly into emptiness.

As though she felt the change, the woman placed her hands directly under his fingers on her pregnant stomach, then she took his hand and squeezed it.
“They will hunt us,” she whispered quietly. His agonised expression made Elizabeth feel pity for him.

“And they will catch us,” continued the woman. “You know they will. It makes no sense to worry now.”

“I’m so sorry,” he whispered without looking at her.

“What are you sorry about?” the woman sat up and stared down at the man. “That you met me? That you love me?” she asked, suddenly angry. “If you regret all of it, I might as well leave!”

“No!” the man gasped and closed his eyes for a moment. Blindly he stretched out his fingers to her. “I’m not sorry about us.” He opened his eyes and looked at her in distress. “You know I’m not. I could never regret it. I will never be sorry I gave up everything for you.” He took in a deep breath and pulled her towards him. “I love you. You brought love into my darkness. You’re more than I deserve. But,” the man’s voice suddenly broke in pain. “I’m sorry that you have to go through all of this. If I had never met you, you would not have to live with any suffering. I’m sorry for you that you’ll soon be alone.”

“I’m not,” she said firmly and lay back against his strong body. “I’m not sorry about one moment of it. Not one moment with you. Not one moment of the future.” She kissed his neck and buried her face into his chest. “And please, don’t ruin our happiness now by thinking about the future. We know what’s going to happen. I know how hard it’s going to be. But I won’t let it be ruined now.”

The man pulled a face. “I don’t want to leave you alone.”

“And I don’t want you to die,” the woman said quietly. “And yet it will come. I will manage. I will take care of our child and protect it. And one day we will be together again. Maybe not in this world and maybe not right after. But one day…”

He lightly stroked her stomach and his eyes followed his own gentle touches. “Is it worth it?”

“This child is the future, my love. He is worth more than our lives. He will save the world and finally put a stop to this madness. He will be successful where you failed.”

He grinned slightly. “Charming, darling.”

She nudged him lightly in the side. “You know what I mean. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, they will accept the changes. You were their King, their leader, and they chose to overthrow you rather than take heed of your warnings. They will not give in until they are forced to. You know this. We will save many lives when we sacrifice ourselves.” She laughed suddenly. “And now let’s not talk of it anymore. Let’s enjoy the present.”

The man laughed too. “I will always love you.”

“And I will always search for you when you no longer exist.”

The voices faded and for a moment Elizabeth felt like she was being pulled back into her agonised body. But then the image before her cleared again and she saw men. Many men, hundreds of them. They were attacking a house with torches. Their faces were filled with hate and anger. More and more men stormed the large lawn in front of the house, aggressively baring
