business.â
Trace brought her chin back around. âSorry, sweetheart. Maybe you donât know how this works, but under the circumstances, we need to hear everything. Itâs the only way we can really analyze the potential danger.â
âYou actually think Marc could be involved?â
âHeâd have reason to be furious with Jacksonâor with you.â
Surprise held her silent for a heartbeat before she scoffed. âYou think Iâm in danger? Thatâs absurd. Jackson is the one who was drugged.â
Unable to hide his smirk, Trace said, âGetting all the facts is the only way we can protect Jackson, too.â
Oh, now, that burned his ass. âI donât needââ
Before Jackson could finish protesting, Alani faltered. âButâ¦Marc wouldnât have had anything to do withââ
âJackson getting doped? Probably not, so donât get alarmed. But I want you to tell me everything anyway.â
Jackson noticed so many thingsâthe way her lips trembled, the new tautness in her shoulders, her pallor and shallow breaths.
âTrace,â he said low. âBack off, will you?â Sure, she needed to be sheltered, but scaring her wouldnât accomplish anything.
Trace narrowed his eyes and cupped Alaniâs shoulder. âNothingâs going to happen to you, honey. This is just a precaution.â
She swallowed hard and averted her gaze from one and all. âI told him I was thinking of seeingâ¦someone else.â
Dare put his elbows on his knees. âYou mentioned Jackson to him?â
âNo, of course not.â She shook her head. âThat would have been needlessly rude.â
Since Alani was the epitome of graciousness, Trace accepted that explanation. âDid anyone know you were coming to see Jackson yesterday?â
âJackson knew.â
Doing a double take, Jackson asked, âI did?â
âI called you.â Her sad smile came and went. âBut Isuppose youâve forgotten that, too. I called you before leaving work.â
âAnyone overhear that call?â Dare asked.
âI was in my office, so I doubt it.â And then, head high and shoulders back, she turned to leave the room. âIâm going to put on coffee.â
âAlaniâ¦â Knowing the idea of danger had shaken her, Jackson started to stand.
âNo.â She stopped him by raising an imperious hand. She pointed a finger at the food sheâd brought him and gave a succinct order. âEat.â
No one gave him orders.
Jackson considered her. Sheâd left her rich boyfriend in the dust. Sheâd freely defended him to her brother.
Sheâd slept with him, whether he remembered it or not.
Overall, he was pretty damn happy with her, so he gave her a salute. âYes, darlinâ. Whatever you say.â
CHAPTER THREE
I N THE KITCHEN, Alani turned on the radio. Loud.
Accommodating them? Or tuning them out?
Didnât matter. Jackson sat forward. âLet me blow this up your skirtâ Iâve met the bastard.â
Dare raised a brow. âHer boyfriend?â
âHer ex -boyfriend. And yeah. He knows me, knows my face and first name.â
âHow the hell did that happen?â
Jackson flagged a hand. âI was chasing her, nothing new in that.â
Trace snarled. âAnd you met him?â
âYeah. Unless heâs dumber than I think, he felt the chemistry between Alani and me.â Jackson challenged Trace. âItâs there and you know it.â
Crossing his arms over his chest, Trace turned to Dare. âJacksonâs been dogging her heels for a while now.â
Dare looked between them. âYou knew about this?â
âYeah.â Letting out a breath, Trace rubbed the back of his neck. âI knew.â
âWasnât a secret,â Jackson said. âI told him. But shitâs different now.â
Deadpan, Dare asked,
