they’d be able to pull this next assignment off. She also worried how performing sex as a job would diminish whatever relationship she and Darius had. If he only told her that he loved her and wanted to plan a future together, maybe get married sometime, she’d be less insecure. But Darius never said those words. Then again, neither did she.
“Nothing screams rich better than a gigantic yacht,” Darius said.
“No kidding. La-di-da. A little overambitious, if you ask me.” She tried laughing to ease her nervousness, but the sight of the ship was intimidating and undermined her confidence.
A guy in khaki shirt and shorts directed Darius where to park. The huge yacht docked at the end of the slip was called The Office. “Wealthy CEO with a sense of humor,” Darius commented.
A crew member in his early twenties in a similar khaki outfit led them onto the yacht into a large salon. Cream and taupe sofas and chairs surrounded the room. Large windows were trimmed in polished teak. A stocked bar and side table sat at one end, with hors d’oeuvres and fresh fruit set out with plates and glasses.
“I’ll tell Mr. Pratt you’re here. Help yourself to a soft drink. The bartender will get you anything you like.” The crew member left. Several other guys dressed in the same crew outfit rushed around the dock or on deck, preparing the yacht for launch. All of them were young, tanned and well built, like they spent any free time in the gym and on the beach.
A short time later, a middle-aged man, handsome, with a thinning hairline, walked into the room holding a cocktail glass. He wore white slacks and a royal-blue shirt. His smile was slightly crooked with a hint of smartass attitude. Destiny suspected that smile had managed to close many impressive business deals.
He approached them with his hand out to shake. “Welcome to The Office. I’m Karl. So nice to meet you two. Oliver highly recommended you.”
Darius introduced Destiny and himself. “Your yacht is amazing. We’re looking forward to the evening.”
“Thank you. I’ll give you a quick tour,” Karl said. “While my wife, Pamela, is still getting dressed, I’ll explain your duties for the evening before the entertainment part. Guests should be arriving soon.”
“Great.” Darius frowned. “What duties? Oliver didn’t say anything about duties. I thought we were going to mingle like one of your guests until we’re given a signal to start our show.”
Karl smiled. “I’m surprised Oliver didn’t explain. It’s rather simple. Tom, the bartender, will help you. You will mingle, serve drinks and hors d’oeuvres to my guests in the salon and up on deck by the hot tub. Toward the end of the evening, we’ll find some way to get the guests’ attention and you can begin your show. We’ll be back to port sometime after midnight.”
“You want us to be servers?” Destiny asked with the professional lawyer tilt of her head. An authority pose she’d observed in other lawyers during her visits to the courtroom. She hadn’t expected to work throughout the evening for several hours. Not that there was anything wrong with being a cocktail waitress. But she’d worn the one and only designer dress she owned. Too bad she couldn’t network tonight. The idea of mingling with some powerful people could’ve led to future clients and job prospects when she graduated and passed the bar exam. But she couldn’t say who she was.
Instead of mingling, she’d be serving all night. Her blond wig and blue contact lenses would disguise her appearance.
“Is there a problem?” Karl frowned. Destiny detected a tone of impatience. She got the impression this man didn’t like to be disappointed and usually got his way.
“No, that’s fine,” Destiny quickly answered. Money was money. “You said something about uniforms?”
“Yes.” He went over to a teak cabinet and opened a draw. He pulled out two items made of black leather straps and buckles, like some
