where a girl is about to sing a Madonna song. âIâm sure youâre very busy.â
âWhatâs
that
supposed to mean?â you ask him. âI donât know, you seem pretty popular. Iâve seen how guys act around you.â He looks away from the stage for a second and meets your eyes. âIâm sure you think Iâm just some kid who has a crush on you or something.â
You sit stunned for a second, trying not to be distracted by the terrible warbling coming from the stage. âThatâs not how I feel,â you tell Zac, and you mean it. Heâs probably the sweetest guy youâve ever metâyou donât care that heâs younger than you, even if your friends do.
âSo your friends havenât been giving you a hard time about hanging out with the âbrainiacâ?â he scoffs.
âI can make up my own mind about people,â you tell him quickly. âI donât really care what my friends have to say about it.â
Zac just frowns and looks back up at the stage. âOkay,â the emcee says, taking the microphone when the girl finally finishes singing. âWho is our next victimâhow about a duet? Do we have any takers?â He looks out over the audience. âCome on, Iâve got that song âBaby, You Broke My Heartâ all cued up and ready to rollâ¦.â
You look over at Zac, who is still sulking a little bit and wonât look over at you. Maybe you should pull him up onstage to sing a duet with youâit could be hilarious, and put him in a better mood. Or would that be too muchâdoes he need some time to cool down and just hang out?
You want to pull Zac up to sing a duet.
Youâd rather wait it out and just watch karaoke for now.
Chapter 31
âIâm so psyched that you decided to come and hang out with us tonightâand not with that Zac kid,â Heather says as she puts on another coat of mascara. You sigh and look at her in the mirror.
âLay off himâheâs a sweet guy,â you say. âWhatever,â Heather scoffs. âCan I use your lip gloss?â she says, and you pass it over to her. âWe better hurryâJon said to meet them in the lobby, like, five minutes ago,â she says, sweeping the gloss over her lips and checking her hair one more time.
When you get down to the lobby, Bryce is there, and heâs got a dateâan older girl who you recognize from the ski rental shop. âHey, this is my lady, Amanda,â he says, introducing you. Jon is there, and heâs brought a friend alongâa big guy with curly hair and an adorable grin. âAnd this is my friend Aiden,â Jon says, looking right at you. Could he be more obvious?
âSo we were thinking that weâd go into town to this club I know,â Bryce says. Then he adds, with awhisper, âThe only problem is that we donât exactly have a ride, but I think Iâve got an ideaâ¦.â
Jon lets out a little laugh. âYeah, man, a classic idea!â His friend Aiden also laughs. You and Heather just look at each other.
âWhatâs so funny?â Heather asks. âYouâll seeâ is all Bryce will say.
Youâre suddenly feeling worriedâyouâre not supposed to leave the lodge without telling the chaperones, and youâre obviously not supposed to leave with a group of guys! You turn to Heather and whisper, âI donât know about this; maybe I should just go and join Zac at the karaoke nightâ¦.â
âOh, come on,â she says, âdonât you want to have fun?â
What would be more fun tonight, doing karaoke with Zac or going dancing with Heather and these guys? You think for a second, then decide to:
Head over to karaoke and meet Zac.
Sneak into town with the guys.
Chapter 32
âYouâre right,â you tell Molly. âWe need to even the score before we hit the slopes!â
âCome
