a seat in the very back.
Amy dropped down in the seat next to me.
âAre you okay?â she said.
âSure,â I said.
âBecause youâre really quiet today,â she said.
I stayed quiet.
âDid you hear what theyâre saying about Scott?â she said. âTheyâre saying heâs in the hospital. Theyâre saying someone beat him up.â
I stayed quiet.
âI heard Travis say you and Scott werefriends,â she said.âYou want to go see him?â
âWhat?â If she had heard Travis, then she also knew what Scott had done to me
.
âYour friend is hurt. You want to go and see him?â
I noticed then that she had light blue eyes. They stared right at me, almost like she knew me.
âIâll go with you if you want,â she said.
I didnât say anything.
âI got into a fight with my best friend,â she said. âIt wasnât her fault. I was mad because of stuff at home and she said something and I started hitting her. She ended up in the hospital. Thatâs why Iâm in the program. Iâm supposed to learn how to control my anger.â
âI didnât hurt Scott,â I said. âAnd weâre not exactly friends anymore.â
âI know,â she said. âSo, you want to go and see him?â
âWhat is it with you?â I said. âWhy do you even care?â
She shrugged. âWhy shouldnât I?â
The truth was, yeah, I wanted to go to the hospital. I wanted to see Scott. I wanted to tell him that it wasnât me. But I didnât think theyâd let me get near him. Amy said, âYouâll never know until you try.â
Amy was the one who went to the information desk to ask what room Scott was in. She told the woman she was Scottâs girlfriend. When we got upstairs, I froze and ducked back around a corner.
âWhatâs the matter?â Amy said.
âThat woman who just came out of that room? Thatâs Scottâs mother.â
She peeked around the corner.
âSheâs down by the elevator. Maybe sheâs leaving. Or going for coffee or something.â
âLetâs get out of here,â I said.
âYou came to see him. So go see him. Iâll wait by the door and let you know if anyone is coming.â
I shook my head.
âCome on, Josh,â she said. âYouâre a good guy. I know it.â
There were those blue eyes again, looking right into me. Then she took my hand and led me to Scottâs room as if I was a little kid. She pushed me inside.
âIâll let you know when anyone comes,â she said.
Scottâs eyes were closed, but he opened them when I came into the room. He had one black eye and a huge bandage on his head.
âHey,â he said.
âHey. How are you feeling?â
He smiled just a little and then winced. âIâve got a really bad headache,â he said.
âAre you going to be okay?â
âI think so. They said I have a concussion and they want to watch me for a while. But theyâre not acting weird, like Iâm dying or anything. And I havenât forgotten anything. At least, I donât think I have.â There was that goofy grin again. If he could grin like that, I figured heâd be okay.
I tried to think of what to say to him. Finally I just said what I had told the cops and Andrew.
âI know I was mad at you for snitching on me,â I said. âTo the cops and at the shelter. But I just wanted you to know, it wasnât me, Scott.â
He started to grin again. I couldnât tell if he believed me. Then he said, âHey, Josh, Iââ
âJosh!â
I turned and saw Amy in the doorway.
âWe better go,â she said. âHis motherâs coming back. And thereâs cops with her.â
I got out of there fast. I saw Scottâs mother and the cops down at the nursesâ station. They were talking to one of the
