blunt insensitivity.
The utter horror in her expression was reason enough to apologize for the crass suggestion, but when she flung herself from Grant’s grasp and out of bed, he realized he’d gone beyond too far.
She stomped to the opposite side of the room, tugging on a robe and grumbling as she stopped at the doorway. “Men! They’re only good for one thing. The rest of the time they should be muzzled and caged.”
A loud knock sounded, and she jumped. “Orsolya? It’s Jolán. I brought supper.”
Orshy swung the door open, gesturing for her guest to enter. “Thank you. Just put in on the coffee table. The pirates can eat when they’re ready. I’m going down to the kitchen for a snack before they drive me batty. Heed my warning, Jolán. Put off taking a mate as long as you can, because having a man in your bed isn’t at all like you’d expect. I have no idea how Rebeka, Kata, and Lujza tolerate living with two men. I’m stuck with a pair of overprotective, tactless louts unless I can send them back to where they came from.”
“Looks like your mood is affected by mating hormones just like the rest of us. Pirates? Great Grandmother said—” Jolán glanced toward the bed and away again as she carried a covered tray to the table in front of the couch. Her eyes widened when she moved several items to make more space for the food. “You tried the transportation spell by yourself? What happened? Oh! You used a moonstone with a pink candle and ginger oil? No wonder you ended up with two of them.”
Knotting the tie at her waist, Orshy turned toward the young woman. “But you said I should use moonstone and ginger oil together, and that’s a white candle for protection. What did I do wrong?”
“The white candles have black wicks. The palest pink ones have white wicks. You mixed your transportation spell with a love charm.” Jolán picked up a piece of parchment, seeming as much like Orshy’s mentor than a friend. Had the younger woman taught their witch how to cast spells? “The incantation is well written, except you needed to be more specific about the location.”
Orshy clasped her hands together and nibbled on her lower lip. She blinked several times in quick succession before looking straight at him and then Grant. A tear on her cheek caught the light as she turned away. “They wanted me because of the charm.”
Ready to bound from the bed to deny a witch’s spell could make him desire a woman, Ethan hesitated when Jolán grasped Orshy by the shoulders. “No, Orsolya. A love charm can only encourage a potential match. The emotion and attraction have to be there already for it to work.”
Relief eased the tension in his neck, and he sank back into the mattress. He’d almost doubted his own feelings for a moment. “You will improve your skills with practice, love, but at present the power you have over us has nothing to do with witchcraft. Our lack of sweet words and ineptitude at postlovemaking talk proves it. Only a man under a spell possesses the charisma to always say and do what his lady prefers. Men are oafs and boors.”
Grant snorted a laugh. “He has the right of that, love. Our behavior often leans toward atrocious. Will you forgive our transgressions and help us learn the proper way to treat a lady witch?”
Clapping her hands, Jolán grinned. “What a lucky woman you are, Orsolya! They want to be trained.”
Orshy rolled her eyes, and her shoulders sagged. “Then I suppose I should keep them.”
As unenthusiastic as her declaration was, Ethan celebrated the victory by blowing her a kiss. “You shan’t regret it, sweet Orshy.”

Chapter 6

“You are welcome to join to us for our weekly poker game tomorrow evening. ’Tis a lively game, with good food and plenty of ale to go ’round.” Amalric’s invitation was met with confused expressions from Grant and Ethan, making Orsolya hide a smile.
Lujza, Kata, and Rebeka and their mates had wasted no time in coming to
