enquired, looking around as everyone else dug in.
âHeâs still in the control room,â Fox explained. âHarry willrelieve him after dinner, heâll grab his own food then. How did you and Matt get on?â he asked quietly, shooting a glance towards the bulky man, who was deep in conversation with Harry.
âHeâs great, Iâve learned so much already! I never knew there were so many small parts involved in keeping an engine running,â she gushed. Fox laughed.
âSo youâre enjoying yourself.â
âDefinitely. What were you up to?â she asked curiously, spooning more stew into her mouth.
âJust stuff,â Fox replied evasively.
âWhat do you think, Mattie? Can the sprog stay?â Harry asked, his loud voice interrupting their conversation. Matt looked Catherine up and down, seeming to consider.
âYeah, heâs a sharp lad, fine by me.â
Catherine glowed with pride from the praise. Harry looked around the crew in turn. Alice shrugged, having already said her piece. Fox scowled.
âWell, I canât exactly say no, can I?â he pointed out.
âCome on, Fox, you know weâre all run a bit thin on this ship. One more canât hurt, and itâll give you more time to work on your little projects.â
âYeah, itâs fine by me.â Fox smiled cheekily. âGood to have someone younger to bully.â Alice rolled her eyes.
âWell, that settles it. Welcome to the crew, Cat. Alice, love, would you dig out some of Foxâs old clothes for him?â Harry added. His wife smiled and nodded.
âWill do. They might still be a little big on him, though.â
âThank you, Iâm sure theyâll be fine,â Catherine insisted.
âWhere are you from, anyway, Cat?â Matt asked.
âBreningarth, born and bred,â she answered, hoping she could think quickly enough so as not to get caught in her own cover story.
âWe assumed as much, but where specifically?â Matt continued, holding his bowl out towards Alice with a hopeful look on his face.
âJust outside Greystone,â Catherine told him. It was technically true; Greystone was the closest part of common city to the government district she lived in. A lot of kids in Greystone were educated alongside government children.
âOuch, hard luck. No wonder you ran,â Matt said sympathetically. Being the closest to the government district, Greystone barely had any children over the age of thirteen due to the ease of Collecting from there. âAre you sure your parents wonât miss you?â he asked in a low voice, frowning. He clearly hadnât believed her earlier words.
Catherineâs smile vanished, and her eyes fixed on her bowl.
âLike I told Alice, my parents ⦠arenât around,â she said awkwardly.
Fox patted her shoulder âYes, well, thatâs always the story,â he muttered quietly. Catherine wondered again what
his
story was.
She looked over to include the rest of the crew.
âWhat about you, where have you all come from?â she asked.
âWell,â Alice began, glancing at her husband. âHarry and I met years ago in Mericus â Iâm from there originally. I was sixteen, he was seventeen and flying with his father. My parents owned an inn by the shipyard, and I wasworking behind the bar when Harry and his dadâs crew rented rooms with us. I fell in love with him and when he asked me to come with him, I couldnât say no.â Her eyes shone at the memory, and Catherine smiled as the two kissed, their love obvious.
âI asked her to marry me as soon as it was respectable â wasnât going to let her get away!â Harry said. âWhen my dad died, I inherited this little beauty, and we made it our own. Had a few issues when the war began â we lost half our crew to the army, and the other half to their families. Wasnât so bad
