snickered.
âWhat?â I asked her.
âItâs so funny how Jason answered the question for you in mathletes.â Payton grinned. âAnd how Mason said ânumber two.â Hah!â
I so should not have told her that story.
âYour concept of humor is disturbing,â I said. âAnd alsodisturbing is that today Iâm tutoring twin horrors who apparently have no shame about humiliating me.â
âTheyâre little kids,â Payton said. âNot monsters.â
âSpeaking of monsters, did I tell you about the green tail?â I asked her.
âUm, no,â Payton said.
âI swear I saw a green tail come out of one of their shirtsleeves.â I shuddered. I had a nightmare last night about twin giant green monsters attacking me with their tails.
âNow you sound disturbed. I think you need to get more sleep,â Payton said.
Payton pulled off her hoodie, so she just had a plain white long-sleeved T-shirt on. The hoodie was one of her Summer Slave clothes.
âNo sense in ruining my cute hoodie when Iâm cleaning,â Payton explained.
âHah, youâre changing out of your Summer Slave clothes so you can be a Stage Slave!â I said.
âNow your concept of humor is disturbing,â Payton said.
âStage Slave,â I teased her.
âNumber two,â she shot back.
âHi, Payton! Hi, Emma!â The voice behind us made us both jump.
Oh. Tess.
âHi, Tess,â I said tensely.
I didnât completely trust Tess. Iâd met Tess first as one of Jazmine Jamesâs sidekicks. Tess had told me sheâd knownJazmine and Hector since they were the three kindergartners in their schoolâs gifted-and-talented program.
âSo, are you nervous or excited?â Tess asked Payton.
âFor what?â I asked her.
âFor play tryouts!â Tess said. âDidnât Payton tell you we have tryouts today?â
Yes, however, apparently Payton hadnât told Tess that she couldnât try out.
âIâm both nervous and excited,â Tess said. âI had a nightmare last night that I was up onstage and I threw up in front of everyone. What if that really happens?â
âThen Payton will clean up the vomit,â I said.
âEmma!â Payton said.
âPayton, just tell her,â I said. âSheâs going to find out anyway.â
âItâs so humiliating,â Payton said. She hid her face in her locker.
âPayton canât try out for the play because her school service is cleaning the filthy drama supply room,â I explained. âThatâs where she disappeared to yesterday during class.â
âYou have to clean?â Tess asked Payton. âYou canât try out?â
âNo,â Payton said. âI was going to tell you, of course, but I felt so stupid.â
âI thought you were just getting ready for the headshots when you were gone,â Tess said. âWhen you came back for your picture your hair looked so nice and shiny. . . .â
âThank you,â I said under my breath.
Payton shot me a dirty look. Well, hey. That was my hair that was clean and shiny. Iâd read about this new conditioner in one of Paytonâs fashion magazines. I, of course, was skeptical about ads, especially in teen magazines. However, the ingredient list caught my eye. And it truly did make my hair extra shiny. Iâd have to recommend it to Payton.
âSo, anyway, Payton canât try out,â I said to Tess. âBut, Tess, thatâs good news for you. Less competition.â
âI donât care about that,â Tess said sadly. âI want Payton to be in the play with me!â
âHmm,â I wondered out loud. âYou really arenât a Jazmine James clone, are you? Jazmine would take out the competition in an instant. Jazmine would be thrilled. Jazmine would beââ
ââcoming down the
