difference if I go back today or tomorrow or next week, even.â
I laughed, wiping the tears out of my eyes. âNext week? God, I hope it doesnât come to that.â
âYou know what I mean. I donât have anywhere I have to be. Thatâs the beauty of being self-employed. I can catch up on work stuff here as easily as anywhere else.â
âYou mean it?â I felt about a hundred pounds lighter already.
âIâve already checked out of my hotel, though, so it would be great if I could move into one of these empty rooms.â
âOh, Brody!â I flung my arms around him. âYouâre amazing. I have to call the rental agency to see if we can stay, but weâll figure something out. Consider me your own private travel agent. And when you find Mr. Right, Iâll plan your wedding for free.â
âWell, that kind of goes without saying.â
Calling the rental company proved easy enough. The next guests werenât arriving until Friday, which gave us a few extra days to figure everything out. It was oursâfor a price, of course, but I wasnât the one paying the bills, so what did I care?
âFeel free to charge us double for the inconvenience,â I generously offered the rental agent.
âNo es necesario, señora,â he replied. âItâs no trouble at all.â
âOh, I insist.â
Next on my list was Evan, who was already at the airport, waiting for us to arrive.
âHi, you on your way?â he asked. âWe need to leave, like, now if weâre going to make it to Mexico City in time for your flight.â
âWe have a situation,â I said. âWe canât leave yet.â
âWhat? Why not?â
âBecause it would land us in a Mexican prison,â I replied. âWe kind of lost a bridesmaid while we were here.â
âHow do you lose a bridesmaid?â
âWell, not lost like âlook under the bedâ lost. You remember Dana? The late arrival you picked up the other night?â
âYeah?â
âSheâs dead.â
âWhat? What happened?â
âWe donât know yet. Theyâre looking into it.â
âThatâs horrible! Is there anything I can do?â
âI hope so. Iâm not sure when weâre going to be able to leave. Is there any way we can reschedule?â
âOf course. My calendarâs pretty flexible this week. I have some flights to make, but thatâs the beauty of being your own boss.â
âThank you, Evan. I really owe you one.â I relaxed a little.
âI do have one condition.â
âWeâll pay you doubleâitâs no problem.â I was starting to enjoy running up a tab for Mrs. Abernathy. They could afford it. Perhaps Iâd insist on luxury gift baskets for the house staff to make up for the inconvenience of dead bodies and histrionic guests.
âYouâre going out with me tonight.â
âEvanââ
âNo excuses. You canât possibly be booked up since you werenât even supposed to be here.â
âI donât think Iâd be very good company.â
âWhat are you going to do, sit home and stew? You need some distraction.â
âNo way. Youâre a pilot. Theyâd probably arrest me for trying to leave the country.â
âI have some friends down at the police department. What if I clear it with them first? Would that make you feel better?â
âEvanâ¦â
âKelsey.â
âOkay, fine.â At least it would give me an excuse to get away from my clients for a bit. Besides, Brody would be thrilled.
âIâll pick you up at seven.â
âOkay, see you then.â
Brody looked at me expectantly as I hung up the phone. âWell? What did he say?â
âThat Iâm going out with him tonight, apparently.â
âWhat? Get out! Thatâs great.â
âI thought youâd
