stare at Emma. âYou mean, this is...sheâs my husbandâsââ
Jessica stood quickly. âEmma, why donât we go wash some of that chocolate off your face? When weâre done, if itâs okay with your aunt, we can go out to the barn and feed Jakeâs new calf.â
âIs it okay, Aunt Savannah? Can I?â Emma asked eagerly.
âOf course you can, sweetie.â Savannah forced herself to smile at her niece. âIâll join you in a few minutes.â
Emma chattered all the way down the hall. When they were out of earshot, Myrna turned to Jake. âWould you please explain to me whatâs going on?â
Jake had known heâd have to deal with his stepmother sooner or later, heâd just hoped it would be later. Dammit. Why couldnât she have stayed in Houston like she was supposed to? âEmma is J.T.âs daughter, Myrna. Her mother died eight months ago and Emma lives with Savannah now. Iâve invited them to stay here for a while.â
âStay here?â Myrna looked genuinely confused. âYouâve invited my husbandâs illegitimate child to stay here? â
Jake saw the indignant lift of Savannahâs chin and stiffness in her shoulders. It was all he could do not to throttle his stepmother. âEmma is my sister, Myrnaââ
âOur sister,â Jared added sharply, rising from his seat.
Jake stood a step closer to Myrna. â Our sister,â he repeated. âAnd I might remind you that she has Stone blood in her veins.â
Distress deepened the lines around Myrnaâs eyes. âJake, surely you can understand my reaction. Itâs not easy to have J.T.âsââ she hesitated, as if searching for another word ââindiscretion waved under my nose like this.â
âEmma,â Jake said through clenched teeth. âHer name is Emma. You refer to her as anything other than her given name, and so help me, Iâll personally show you the door.â
Myrna clutched a hand to her throat, then looked at Savannah. âMiss Roberts, forgive me. I meant no offense. Itâs just that this has all come as a shock to me. I had no idea that you and...Emma were staying here.â
âI understand your surprise, Mrs. Stone.â Savannah shot Jake a heated look. âBut you neednât worry yourself about it. Weâll be leaving tomorrow.â
Jakeâs head turned sharply. âWhat are you talking about?â
Savannah gathered up a few dirty dishes. âThereâs an afternoon flight tomorrow. Iâm sure weâll be able to catch it.â Ignoring the dark look on Jakeâs face, she moved around him and deposited the dishes in the sink. âNow, if youâll excuse me, I think Iâll join my niece in the barn.â
Sheâd barely made it off the front porch before Jakeâs hand took hold of her arm and pulled her around to face him.
âWhat the hell do you think youâre doing?â he snapped.
âIâm going to the barn.â
âYou know what I mean. We had an agreement.â
âThatâs right, we did.â Savannah put her hands on her hips and leaned forward. âI told you that if you or anyone in your family hurt Emma, weâd be gone before you could blink.â
âMyrna was supposed to be in Houston. I had no idea sheâd turn up here today.â
âIâm not talking about Myrna. Iâm talking about you. You never considered what might happen or how Emma would feel if your stepmother showed up. You only thought about what you wanted.â
His eyes narrowed as he stared down at her. âOkay. I messed up.â
âYou got that right, mister.â The air was dry outside and a hot wind whipped her hair in front of her face, but she ignored it. She leaned even closer to Jake and lifted her face to his. âWhen Angela died I made a vow that nothing was ever going to hurt Emma
