You have human genetics and vampire genetics, but there was also something else mixed in. I’m not sure what it is. How long have you been having transition symptoms?” she asked.
“Over a month now.” Bliss responded, worrying her bottom lip.
“When is your thirtieth birthday?” Lucy took out a pen and pad and started to write Bliss’ responses down.
“December. Is there something wrong with me Lucy?” Bliss asked concerned.
Lucy shook her head. “No, no, not wrong, just different. Transition symptoms usually begin a month, maybe six weeks before a vampire’s thirtieth birthday. Yours have started so soon. Tell me about the symptoms.”
Bliss ran her fingers through her hair. “Umm, there’s the burning pain in my stomach and tightness in my chest. There are other times when I feel like my whole body is on fire. My gums hurt near my incisors. My fangs have grown some. Then there are the times when I feel so aggressive I want to rip things apart and then I’m over emotional and feel so lost.”
“Ok, some of those are normal transition symptoms but I felt your pain yesterday and yours is off the chart. Everyone picked up on it and we shouldn’t have been able to. Aggression is normal in males but usually not females. I’m not sure if it’s the human genes playing havoc or if it’s the anomalies I found that are affecting your transition. It is taking much longer than a normal vampire transition. I’d like to consult with another vampire doctor. He specializes in genetics. Would that be ok?” she asked looking from Bliss to me.
“Don’t give him Bliss’ name or tell him anything about her. Just the blood work and symptoms. There are lots of human vampire hybrids out there, but I don’t want anyone to be able to point directly to Bliss.”
Lucy nodded. “Understood Micha. Bliss, I’d like to take a little more blood, if you are okay with that.”
Bliss nodded, exposing her arm. Lucy opened her bag and got out all the necessary implements to draw blood. Bliss winced a bit when Lucy pricked her with the needle but overall it was a quick process. Lucy thanked her, then headed out the door giving me a pointed look.
“I’ll be right back sweetheart. I’m going to see Lucy out.” I followed Lucy out of the bedroom and into the sitting room where she turned to me.
“What is it you aren’t telling us Lucy?” I asked.
“I didn’t want to scare her Micha, that’s why I’m only telling you this. The anomalies I found in her blood are another genetic marker, I just don’t know what. She’s vampire, but she’s more also, and—not human. She has very little human in her blood. It’s all vampire and something else. Something I haven’t seen before.”
“She can go out in the daylight, Lucy, and it doesn’t bother her. I’m almost three hundred years old and I can only go out on overcast days. How can that be if she’s mostly vampire?”
“I don’t know Micha. Your Bliss is very unique. Has she shown any other vampire traits?” Lucy asked curiously.
“She has the healing agent in her saliva. Her fangs are becoming more pronounced. Dante and Reardon mentioned that she has a knack at prediction,” I informed her with a smile, remembering the conversation about the $500 they lost to her.
“Let me know if she develops any different symptoms than the usual ones. And if her pain ever gets to be too much to bear, I have painkillers Micha. Don’t let her suffer unnecessarily.”
“I won’t. I also told her this morning we are going to make sure she gets some of my blood every few hours, it seems to help ease her pain.”
“Good plan. See you guys later.” After I saw Lucy out I went to the table where our food had been placed on warmers. I grabbed a couple of toast slices and the ginger-ale for Bliss, then headed back to our bedroom. I had a mate to take care of.
