the strongest man to some extent.
Her plan was to have Tristan challenge Jace again, but this time, for Tristan to be ready for what was to come. He didn’t have to know that she’d cast a spell on Jace. Hell, he didn’t even know that she was a witch, or that she was also capable of shifting into wolf form. All in due time, she thought. Tristan might feel threatened by her power, her strength.
She began to put her plan into action. When Tristan returned to see her that night, she would talk to him. They would arrange a challenge and she would join him when the time came. She would also make sure that Dez knew what was happening; no doubt the alpha’s mate would want to be there to watch the altercation.
Sophie closed the book, placed it back in the drawer and smiled.

Dez was still suffering the torment of her recurring nightmare, the one in which she was tied up in the woods and a large she-wolf was clawing at her helpless form. Her boyfriend Jace had advised her to try and stay in the realm of the dream; to try and understand who the she-wolf represented, and what the threat was. “Remember,” he had said, “It’s only a dream.” Still, when Dez was in its midst it felt terribly real.
When she ’d first experienced it, she’d always awakened after a point when the wolf clawed at her, and, half-naked, she found herself surrounded by an entire pack of gigantic wolves. Now she was learning to control it. Though she couldn’t begin the dream’s events sooner, she could hold off waking up until she’d witnessed more. It was difficult, though, because with each dream came more sadness.
The she-wolf paced in front of her. It had clawed at her, tearing her shirt. She was exposed to the cold and to the glowing eyes of the pack, her round breasts dripping with blood. Though she was wounded, all the cuts were superficial and she knew that the wolf only intended to instill fear in her.
Blood trickled down from a slash about her right nipple and coloured the pink flesh red. Dez entreated the wolf to stop, to let her go, but the leather straps around her wrists and ankles seemed only to grow tighter. Her legs were yanked apart, the trees seeming to sway in opposite directions in order to force even more separation between them. Whereas Dez had been happily tied up in bed at times by Jace, now she felt vulnerable, weak. Why wasn’t her alpha here to defend her?
When the wolves came out of the trees towards her, they stopped behind the female, as if awaiting her command. She appeared to be the alpha, and this was something that hadn’t occurred to Dez before---that there could even be a female alpha.
Finally, a large dark wolf emerged from the woods. His eyes flashed in the moonlight. It was Jace. He stood still, growling, and Dez felt relief. As though he could free her. He could vanquish this awful female. And yet something held him back. It was as though there was an invisible wall between them.
He lunged at last, and in three strides he was at the she-wolf’s neck. But she saw him coming. She was ready.
Dez shot up in bed, sweating as always after the nightmare.
Jace sat up next to her and put an arm around her.
“You all right, sweet thing?” he asked.
“Yeah.” She was breathing heavily but she remained under control. “I really wanted to see more. You were there, Jace. It was you.”
    “What happened?”
“You came out of the woods and attacked her. The gray wolf. Only I didn’t see what happened after that. All I know is that she knew you were coming. It’s almost as if she wanted you to.”
“And well she may. But I’d be prepared for that, too.”
“I don’t understand, though. She seemed to be the alpha.”
“I suppose that could happen,” said Jace. “Though it’s not very likely. As I’ve said, there are no females around these parts. But remember that werewolves and normal wolves are a little different. Normally the alpha male is the father to a lot of the pups. Our
