He looked very worried. âNo, thank you. I think Iâll just make myself some coffee. Iâm not very hungry.â
âDid you know we were robbed?â Henry asked him.
A little more color seemed to drain from Robâs face. âNo, I had no idea,â he said.
âThey took everything we left in the canoe,â Henry explained.
âEven the paddles,â Benny added.
âAngela?â Rob asked.
âWeâre not sure.â Henry looked closely at Rob. âBut sheâs gone now.â
âWhat a shame.â Rob shook his head.
âWeâre staying here another night,â Benny announced. âThere are some things we want to look for in the woods.â
Henry gave Benny a warning look, but Rob didnât seem to notice.
âOkay,â Rob said, but his thoughts seemed faraway. âIâll be in the bunkhouse if you need me. I need to catch up on some sleep.â
As they walked through the woods in back of the bunkhouse, Jessie told Henry all about meeting Matt and Bill.
âThey didnât act like forest rangers,â Benny added.
Henry sighed. âI think we should sit down and talk about all this.â He pointed to some big boulders under the trees. When they were all seated, he told Jessie, Benny, and Aunt Jane how mysterious Rob had been acting.
âHe hasnât been himself since we ran into Angela,â Violet added.
âThat doesnât mean he took our stuff,â Jessie said. She hated to think that Rob might be a thief.
âI canât prove he took anything.â Henry sighed. âAll I know is he wasnât in the bunkhouse all evening. After he met Angela, wedidnât see him again until this morning.â
âHe didnât seem to like Angela any more than we did,â Violet added.
âNo, but I think he knows more than heâs letting on,â Henry remarked.
Jessie pulled a piece of paper and a pen out of her rain jacket. âI think we should make a list of all the people we suspect,â she said.
âIt seems like no one wants us on this trail,â Violet said. âBut I still think Angela is the most suspicious.â
âI think so, too,â Benny added.
âBut,â Henry said, âhow would she have had time to take all our things, pack them away somewhere, and get away?â
âIâll put Angela on the list along with Lorenzo, Rob, Matt, and Bill,â Jessie said. âAll of them, except maybe Rob, have tried to talk us out of continuing our trip.â
âWell, Matt and Bill didnât really try to stop us,â Benny said.
âNo,â Jessie agreed. âBut they seemed suspicious. They said they were forest rangers, but they didnât act like real rangers,â Jessiereminded her brother. âAnd they asked a lot of questions.â
âDo you think Lorenzo is really a scientist?â Benny asked.
âI donât know,â Jessie answered. âThere are certainly people on this trail pretending to be things they arenât.â Jessie wrote scientist with a question mark next to Lorenzoâs name.
âItâs funny, everyoneâs acting so strange,â Violet remarked. âWhat do they think we know?â
âOr what do they think weâll find out?â Henry said.
âLetâs see.â Jessie was still busy writing. âI believe Lorenzo was the only person we talked to about the riddle.â
âThatâs right,â Henry nodded. âAnd we didnât talk to anyone about the coin robberies.â
âWe wonât know anything about the coins unless we look for some clues,â Benny reminded his family. Everyone agreed. Benny ran on ahead and disappeared in a grove of pine trees.
Jessie put away her paper and chased afterhim. âWe donât really know what weâre looking for,â she said as they both stopped to catch their breath.
They were surrounded by pine
