to rush into any of this now I think about it.”
Tito shook his head and his expression darkened like a stormy sky. “You would trust your son ’ s life to the British police? When no specific crime has yet been committed and there are no suitable boxes for them to tick on their bureaucratic forms?” The movement of his fists clenching caught her eye. “By the time they act it will be too little too late. Your enemies won ’ t abide by any rules. They move like shadows and leave no trace. Look what happened to Yannis and the rest of the Frangos men. Until they are caught, neither of you are safe, and you won ’ t stand a chance if they get to you. The most experienced detectives in Greece have had no luck in over a year, so what chance do the British guys have? And your community officers don ’ t even carry a gun…”
“What the hell is going on?” Kimmie ’ s face was pale as her words tumbled out. “This sounds really scary.”
“It might be,” he said. “But none of this will affect you. It ’ s Nick and Erica that these people may be after. It ’ s not certain, but it is a serious risk, a risk I am not prepared to take, and also a reason for not taking up your offer of going through Erica ’ s things. I ’ ve just been told there is suspicious activity connected to the house in which she lives, so my team of professionals will deal with it from now on. They know what they are doing.”
“And do they carry guns? ” Erica ’ s remark had meant to sound sarcastic, but once the words were uttered she realized she had just asked a question to which she didn ’ t want to know the answer. Tito sighed, and she suddenly noticed the dark shadows under his eyes. It appeared they were both sleep deprived. Her baby pushed his small warm head into the crook of her neck and began to whimper. She didn ’ t have long before he would be yelling his head off again demanding food and a nappy change. Her priority had to be her son ’ s safety—there was no doubt in her mind about that—so for the time being she would go along with Tito Makris ’ s plan. The matter of them having a ridiculous marriage could be dealt with later. “Okay, we ’ ll play it your way for now to be on the safe side. And I ’ m only doing this for Nick, you understand? Let ’ s get out of here.”
“I ’ m impressed you thought about the car seat,” Erica said flatly as the Range Rover swung away from Kimmie ’ s house and accelerated onto the main road out of Plumstead.
“ I don’ t like to take chances on anything if I don ’ t have to.” Tito ’ s hand slid down to where the seatbelt tethered the baby seat to the plump upholstery of the backseat between them. She saw him touch the metal clip briefly and then, as if satisfied everything was in order, rested his large palm back on his thigh. Erica found herself staring at the way the fine material of his suit trousers stretched across that thigh. At the muscles and sinews she imagined lay beneath just inches from where she sat. “And both I and the driver have practiced fitting it so many times we can do it in under ten seconds, so don ’ t worry. ”
She snapped her gaze away before he caught her looking at his body. “Well, that ’ s more than I can do. Thank you.”
He made a silent hand gesture to the driver, and the interior ceiling slid back to reveal a panoramic glass roof. “No problem, and this car is much safer than his own cot back in your flat right now.”
She suddenly felt irritated and wasn ’ t honest enough with herself to admit that it was because of the effect he was having on her, not because of the circumstances she found herself in or the moist, grumpy sniveling of her fractious baby. “You do seem very keen to remind me of that, Mr. Makris, and I wish you wouldn ’ t because it ’ s making me feel on edge and Nick is picking up on it.” She stroked his downy head as he wriggled and squirmed against the restraints and his cheeks
