his gaze so she wouldn't have to spend much time thinking about that.
"If we're all done staring at the angel of death over there," Billy said, sparing an extra glance at Kate's armored suit again, "Does this mean we're ready for our trip to Disneyland?"
Doc shook his head.
"If you're going to go up against your first supervillain, you should look the part, right?" he asked.
"I have a bad feeling about this," Emily said.
Chapter 8:
Distribution
Doc told them the guy went by the name Distribution because he thought it was funny. When Doc explained the guy's powers, it did actually seem a bit humorous. At least to Billy. He tried to get Jane to understand why he believed so, but, as he stood across the street from Distribution's base of operations in the run-down industrial complex just outside the city, he wasn't having much luck.
"He's got a power suit that uses kinetic energy to create super strength and stuff," Billy said. "And he's a drug dealer! Get it? Distribution? He's all distribution."
"Can you focus? Just for a little while?" Jane's eyes flashed sunset-gold for a split second.
Billy gave up. "Fine."
"Now," Jane said, approaching a black and chrome status symbol of a car parked in front of the building Distribution used as his home base, "We should get his attention."
Jane picked up the car by the front bumper then slapped it down on the pavement like a playing card.
Kate and Titus waited in an alleyway, watching Jane and Billy start trouble.
The plan was for the big guns to deal with Distribution himself, while Kate and Titus took out the goons who'd follow their target out the door. Kate wasn't happy about it, but just this once she'd let Doc's tactics slide. She hadn't kicked anyone in the teeth for some time, anyway.
They watched Jane treat Distribution's car like a beach towel. Titus laughed.
"It's time for me to get angry," he said. He looked at Kate and, for a moment, appeared incredibly young, almost vulnerable. "Sorry if I make a mess."
On cue, a gaggle of thugs, armed with small firearms and the occasional knife, stormed out the main door of the building. Distribution, wearing a full suit and fedora, strolled out behind them.
A fedora, for crying out loud, Kate thought, who does he think he is. She half-expected some big, melodramatic speech from the alleged supervillain. Instead, he kept it simple.
"My car!"
Billy and Jane sidestepped away from each other, waiting for Distribution's first move. The villain took off his suit coat and revealed the glowing wires and silvery armor of a form-fitting bodysuit underneath his street clothes. He reached back and pulled up a hood that protected most of his head in the same glittering material.
Watch this one, Dude said.
Billy nodded. He knew the alien presence would feel the gesture and read it appropriately.
Can we blast him?
We will have to try .
Then Jane leapt full force at the thug and punched him square in the face with a blow that would have shattered the average jaw. Instead, Distribution laughed.
"You're kidding, right?" Distribution said, and backhanded Jane, sending her sprawling into a nearby wall. Bricks turned to red powder as she landed.
"Crap," Billy said.
Jane dragged herself to her feet and smiled.
"Just wanted to see if you could take a punch," she said.
Then, Distribution's men started shooting.
Kate watched Titus transform, then leap into action. One moment he was a scared kid, the next he was seven feet of gray and black fur with massive jaws. He bounded on all fours toward the gangsters. This was part of the plan, but Kate still felt
