a nice dinner. They talked about the upcoming holiday, whom they’d met at the festival, and Olivia’s speech. Kai waited until he’d brought out the apple pie to tell Sarah what was in his heart. “Sarah, how much do you know about shifters and their mates?”
She took a bite of pie and chewed slowly while she thought. “Well, a shifter mates for life usually. Once they find their mate, they don’t usually cheat except for a few species.”
“That’s right. Do you know why I’m bringing this up?”
She shook her head but also pushed the plate of pie away. She leaned closer to Kai. “No. Why?”
“You’re my mate. You’re the one I’m supposed to be with. I know we’ve only just met, but I don’t want you to go back to Australia. At least not now. When KJ graduates, I’ll go wherever you want. I want to see where this is going. I think this could be forever.”
Her eyes glistened. “Really?”
He put his hand over hers. “Yes.”
She reached across the table and hugged him hard, then buried her face in his shoulder. “This is all pretty scary. I mean, you have a kid and you don’t even live on the same continent as me. I’d have to give up my whole life…but I want to. I think this could be something too.”
Kai held her until she climbed over the table and into his lap. She pressed against him suggestively and looked him in the eye. Kai’s leopard recognized the signs of arousal, but Kai struggled to control himself for a moment longer.
“Are you sure?” he asked her.
Sarah bit her lip and nodded. Kai didn’t need to be told twice. His hands were all over her. He let his leopard have free rein. This was his mate and he was going to take her in every way possible. He kissed Sarah while pulling down her tight jeans, growling at the sight of her lacy red panties. He pushed her up onto the table and wrapped her legs around him.
She ran her nails down his back lightly as they continued to make out. Kai only kept his leopard slightly in check. He didn’t want to hurt Sarah; he just wanted to be inside of her as quickly as possible. He hooked a finger inside her panties and pulled them off. She hurried to remove her top and bra while he pulled her legs apart, then Kai knelt and buried his face in her wetness. He tasted her until she was pressing hard against his shoulders and calling his name.
Once he had her good and worked up, Kai stood up and pulled off his pants. Sarah smiled at him and pulled him close with one leg. “I want to feel you inside of me.”
Kai obliged her with a roar. When he was balls deep inside of her, he paused and kissed his mate. He reveled in the feel of her a moment longer before he began moving.
They moved around the picnic table for a few hours before they finally parted. Kai helped Sarah dress and gave her his coat, then they packed up the picnic supplies and headed back to town.
Kai held her hand as he drove. “Want to come back to my place?”
Sarah looked at him slyly and nodded. “I’m not tired yet.”
“KJ won’t be home until the afternoon tomorrow.”
“I know.” Sarah looked out the window. “I love you.”
Kai squeezed her hand. “I love you too.”
Epilogue
It had been a whirlwind year. It had had its ups and downs, but she wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Sarah sat with baby Sam in the crowded room where all the LK Brides were gathered for one last commercial. It was the third and final one, according to the company.
“We’re going to be back in a few years for a reunion commercial,” Rachel Preacher said matter-of-factly. “They’re never going to let us go.”
“As long as they pay for baby wranglers for an afternoon, I’m in,” Gwen Cates said.
Sarah watched an assistant try to coax one of Gwen’s twin girls into frame. They were trying to get a picture of all the children, and it was proving very difficult. Sarah had the second youngest baby, and they were going to put Sam and Rachel’s adopted son into the shot
