me!â
The bell rang, and Sean chugged the rest of his soda. âRemember, I canât drive you home today,â he told her. âI have a chess club meeting.â
Not exactly walking weather, Reenie thought after her last class. Dark and wet out. It will probably snow before I make it home.
She wandered over to the student parking lot, hoping she could find someone to give her a ride.
Reenie gasped as she felt a cold, damp hand squeeze her neck. She spun around and found Liz grinning at her.
âSorry, I couldnât resist,â Liz told her.
âArenât you freezing?â Reenie demanded. Every button on Lizâs coat was open. And she wasnât wearing a sweaterâonly a thin blouse.
âNo,â Liz answered. âI love the cold.â
Reenie hated gray winter days. They seemed to wash the color out of everything.
Everything except Lizâs hair, Reenie noticed. Iâd kill for hair like that, she thought. All those coppery highlights.
âI heard what happened to you yesterday!â Liz exclaimed. âWow. Scary.â
âReally scary,â Reenie declared. âHow are you and P.J. doing at Shadyside?â she asked, changing the subject. She didnât want to think about the accident.
âGreat,â Liz answered. âItâs hard to believe I didnât know anyone but P.J. a month ago.â
Reenie found it hard to believe, too. Liz had become a good friend. Reenie felt as though she had known Liz for much longer than a month.
âWell, I guess P.J.âs not exactly doing so great,â Liz confessed. âHeâs so awkward and shy. Itâs hard for him to approach people.â
âIâve noticed,â Reenie commented.
âItâs not really P J.âs fault, you know,â Liz said.
Not sure what to say, Reenie didnât respond. They started across the parking lot, slipping between a Jeep and an old Chevy.
âP.J.âs not well,â Liz went on.
âWhatâs wrong with him?â
âHeâs frail. He canât do physical things.â
âMaybe he should work out or somethingâbuild up his strength,â Reenie suggested.
âYou donât understand. Heâs got a heart murmur. He canât work out or anything like that. Heâs excused from PE.â
âHow ⦠how serious is it?â
âHeâs okay as long as he doesnât do physical stuff.â
Reenie felt guilty for all the mean things she had been thinking about P.J. She decided to try to make him feel more welcome at Shadyside High.
âGreta and P.J. seem to have a lot to talk about,â Reenie observed.
âI wish he would ask her out. But Iâm afraid heâs too shy. Heâs never worked up the courage to ask any girl out.â
âHeâs never gone out with a girlâever?â Reenie asked, surprised.
âNever. But donât tell anyone, okay? P.J. would be really bummed if it got around.â
âI wonât,â Reenie promised. âI think it would be great for P.J. to go out with someone,â Reenie continued slowly. âBut Gretaâs still going with Artie, so â¦â
Reenie heard footsteps behind her and turned around. She found Ty hurrying to catch up to them.
âHey. Where you guys headed?â he called breathlessly.
âNowhere special,â Liz replied.
Ty has a car, Reenie remembered. At last. A ride.
âLiz â¦â Ty hesitated.
âUh-huh?â
âCould I ask you something?â
Oh, no, Reenie thought. Tyâs finally decided to ask Liz out, and Iâm standing here like her chaperon.
She checked her watch. âListen, you guys, Iâve got to run. Iâll catch you later, okay?â
âOkay,â Liz replied. âSee you tomorrow.â
âLater,â Ty said.
Reenie moved deeper into the parking lot. Itâs emptying out fast, she thought. Isnât there anyone
