me to handle the business side of things now,â she added with some pride. âIt lets him stay focused and on track. Itâs a great partnership.â
âI hope youâre enjoying it all. You certainly travel a lot.â
âMum, weâd love you to come with us, I donât know why you wonât come and stay at the villa.â
âThanks for asking, but you know I donât like flying. Anyway, you have enough on your plate without worrying about me.â
As Miltonâs creativity continued to flourish and his work was more and more in demand throughout the world, he made a decision that his daughters vehemently opposed.
âI have decided that the best thing for us all is that you girls start boarding at your school.â
His daughters wailed and protested.
âI bet this is Kerrieâs idea. She wants to get rid of us,â said Renata.
âWhat about my horse?â Luisa started to cry.
âYou hardly ride him any more,â snapped Alia. âI wonât like it. Iâll be lonely.â
âGirls, I promise you that youâll enjoy it,â said their father. âAnd you already have stacks of friends there. Besides, you can come home on the holidays. Youâll only be gone in term time.â
âBut why do we have to board? Why canât we stay at home?â demanded Renata.
âBecause I think it will be easier for us all. Wendy says it will broaden your interests, give you greater stability and youâll learn to be independent,â said Milton.
âYou and Kerrie donât want us around,â snapped Luisa. âNext thing youâll be selling this house and going away with her.â
âGirls, I think youâre overreacting. This will always be your home, but Kerrie and I are overseas so often these days and Wendy doesnât want to work fulltime anymore, although sheâll always be here for your holidays if weâre not. Now I have the opportunity to work in Paris for a while and, rather than disrupt your lives, I think that boarding school is the best solution. We will come back and forth, and you can come to Paris in the holidays. Letâs at least try it for a year. It really is simpler all round.â
âItâs a horrible idea,â said Alia, fighting back tears. âWendy would never agree to letting us board.â
âWell, thatâs where youâre wrong. She knows what a top-notch education youâll get.â
âIâve told the girls about boarding,â said Milton as Kerrie entered the room. âIt seems they arenât enthused.â
âIt wasnât my idea,â began Kerrie, âbut I have to agree with your father and Wendy that this will be the best because it will be less disruptive.â
âNaturally,â said Renata spitefully. âWell, Iâm not going. Iâm going to move in with my best friend. Iâm sure her parents will agree.â
âYou canât send us away!â Alia began to sob.
Milton stood up. âThere will not be any more discussion. Youâre all enrolled and the first term has been paid for.â
âYou can still see your friends every day,â began Kerrie. âThere will be so many opportunities, Wendy says that youâll have more time to do drama, Luisa . . .â
âI donât care. Youâll never come and see me in any plays, youâll be swanning round Europe,â yelled Luisa and strode from the room, followed by her sisters.
Kerrie sighed. âI suppose itâs a shock for them.â
âItâs a logical and sensible idea. Wendy is right. If the girls are to get the best education, they need to have as much stability as possible.â He kissed Kerrie and added softly, âBesides, it will be nice to have you all to myself. I love you, sweet girl.â
Kerrie loved Paris and for the first time in years she felt her creative juices flowing again.
