fall in a groundhog hole and trip or something. I couldnât keep an eye on him and run fast, too.â
They sat quietly for a while, staring out over the ocean. The girl ponies had wandered off into the hills for the night, and everything was hushed under the three strange moons. Even the waves were calm, no longer foaming up onto the beach.
âIâm beginning to get an idea,â Vanessa said at last.
âTell us,â Steven said.
âHave you ever tried going together during the day? With the girls riding on your backs, I mean?â
âWhy would we do that?â Alexander said. âWe canât run as fast that way. Besides, only one of us has to reach Paximus in order to break the spell for all of us.â
âI know,â Vanessa said. She furrowed her brow, deep in thought. âTell me this. Can you understand what the girls are saying to you when youâre a pony, even though you canât talk back?â
âOf course.â
âGood. Now, this afternoon, when we all went for a ride up to the end of the beach, Guaryntis didnât pay any attention to us. But we were twice as near to the forest as we are here in the meadow.â
âI knew that,â Steven said. âThatâs why I took a chance and made a run for it.â
âSo if you do that again, maybe youâll be close enough for one of you to make it all the way.â
âI donât think so,â Alexander said. âGuaryntis would just go after whoever is in the lead, and get him first.â
âBut what ifâ¦â Vanessa began. She paused and sat quietly for a few moments. âListen, Alexander, you said you couldnât avoid the dragon because you couldnât see where he was, and still watch where you were going at the same time, right?â
âThatâs the problem,â Alexander said.
âSo what if Iâ¦â And she leaned forward and whispered in his ear.
Alexander sat up straight, and his eyes opened wide. âThat just might work!â he said excitedly. Then he frowned. âBut if it doesnât, heâll capture you, and youâll have to stay here in Partequineus forever.â
âI know,â Vanessa said. âBut itâs your only hope.â She stood up. âListen, I have to go home now. Iâve been here for hours and hours.â
âDonât worry,â Steven said. âYouâll arrive back at four oâclock, just like always. No one will know youâve been gone.â
âBut Iâm already very tired. Iâll have to stay up with Mom until at least nine, or sheâll think somethingâs wrong with me.â
âGo ahead, then,â Alexander said.
âIâll be back next Friday,â Vanessa said to him. âYou tell everyone what our plan is. And when I get here, weâll all take a nice, quiet ride down to the very end of the beach, just like we did today.â
âI hope it will work,â Alexander said.
âIt has to,â Vanessa said. âGuaryntis has kept you prisoner long enough. You all deserve to go home.â
Vanessa took one step back.
âDonât forget about us,â little Frank said.
âI wonât let you down,â she said. Two steps.
âYouâre very brave,â Evan said.
âSo are you.â And with the third step, Vanessa was once again standing by the edge of her bed, with the four oâclock sunshine streaming in through the window. Her pale blue tunic was the only proof that she had been away. She slipped it off and put on her school clothes again, and was on her way downstairs when her mother came in the door.
âHello, sweetheart,â Vanessaâs Mom said cheerfully. âAnything exciting happen today?â
Vanessa smiled with secret pleasure. âOh, you know,â she said. âJust the usual stuff.â
