âWhy?â
âXavierâs here.â Megan nodded toward the man by the riding ring.
âIâll call security and have him thrown off the property.â
A horse and rider came into view, sailing over the hogâs-back jump sheâd set up for this afternoonâs advanced student. âWait. Thatâs Apollo. With Tim in the saddle.â
âThe stallion you used to ride for Xavier?â
âYes. What is Xavier up to now?â
âTrying to get your attention would be my guess.â
âWell, tough. Iâm not up for another confrontation. Could you drop me off at the cottage?â
âIâll do that after we find out who gave that jerk permission to be here. Somebody must have. My guess isWyatt. I knew not telling him about your pregnancy was a mistake.â Hannah put the car into motion and did a U-turn.
âThe fewer people who know, the better my chances are of keeping Xavier from finding out before he loses interest in the chase and returns to France.â
âIf he stays heâll find out anyway.â
âI know, but Iâm willing to bet heâll leave as soon as I convince him Iâm not going to follow him home like a lost puppy.â
They parked by the big house. Megan climbed from the car and trailed Hannah to the study where Wyatt sat behind his big desk. It felt so different to come here now when she didnât have to tippy-toe to avoid yet another reprimand from Hannahâs father.
Wyatt rose immediately and crossed the room to greet Hannah with a hug and a kiss. Megan averted her face to the tender moment. After this morningâs realization that sheâd better get used to doing things on her own, their obvious love for each other was more than she could handle.
âDid you know Xavier Alexandre is at the stables?â Hannah asked.
âYes. Iâve given him permission to interview our riders.â
Dread filled Megan. She couldnât risk bumping into Xavier at every turn.
âYouâve what?â Hannah practically screeched, extracting herself from her fiancéâs embrace.
âXavier is giving me inside information on advertising on the Grand Prix circuit for the new product launch. In return Iâm granting him access to our riders so he can select one or more to exhibit his horses. He said Megan refused.â
âOf course she did.â
âHannah, baby, this is business. Your feud is personal.â
âBut how can you let him on this property after the way heâs treated Megan?â
Megan winced. She didnât want to be the cause of contention between the lovebirds. âHey, guys, no need to fight.â
âRelationships end.â Wyattâs brown eyes turned to Megan. âCanât you and he handle this situation like adults?â
Meganâs mouth opened, closed. Her tongue felt as dry as an old sock. âItâs a little more complicated than that.â
âDid he ever hurt you? By that I mean physically abuse you or threaten to do so?â
âNo.â
âIs he threatening you now?â
She exhaled slowly, resignation settling like a lead weight on her shoulders. Apparently the men were going to side together. âNo.â
âWyatt, thatâs not the point. Sheâs pregnant and he canât find out.â
âHannah!â Megan squeaked in dismay.
Her cousin grimaced. âIâm sorry, Megan, but Wyatt needs to understand why youâve refused to ride Xavierâs horses and why we canât allow him on our property.â
Again Wyattâs gaze drilled Meganâs, making her yearn for the solitude of her cottage. âThe babyâs his?â
âYes.â
âYou havenât told him?â
âNo. Given the fact that heâs engaged to someone else, I didnât want to risk a custody battleâone I canât afford and might lose.â
Wyattâs face softened only slightly.
