ravine. By ten in the morning, the survey of the proposed battle site had been completed. Mounting their horses, they started west toward Mexicali with the thought of reaching the truck by sundown.
Getting back to El Coyote by ten in the evening, Rudd and Len went directly to the bar to order beer and sandwiches. They ate and drank for half an hour, agreed to meet sometime the next day, and then bid one another good night.
On the way to his room, Rudd looked in the restaurant and saw Kathryn smiling. He waved and pointed up, indicating that he would be waiting for her.
Upstairs in his room, he bathed and shaved in anticipation of being with her. He poured a shot of whiskey, drank it, and lay down on the bed to rest his eyes and soon fell asleep.
A short while later, the feeling of Kathryn’s warm body and kisses awakened him. As he came out of the fog of slumber, she reached down and touched him, causing him to become aroused. His eyes opened, he smiled, and without a word, she mounted him. He felt her body quiver and thrilled to her whimper as he penetrated deeply. Rudd had known from their first meeting that it would be like this.
Early the next morning, a knock sounded at the door. “Who is it?” Rudd asked, speaking loudly from the bed.
“It’s Len. I’ve got a message from my father. He wants to see you in the bar at two o’clock today.”
“I’ll be there. Thank you, Len.”
Kathryn snuggled closer and kissed him on the cheek. Reaching under the sheet, she whispered, “I want more.”
“You’re going to get more, a lot more, but be patient,” he answered playfully.
“I want more, now,” she insisted, throwing the sheet back and pulling him on top of her.
    “Impatient, aren’t you?” he teased.
“With you… always,” she replied, raising her head to seek his lips.
At a few minutes ’til two, Rudd stepped into the bar to find Ben and Don Hoff waiting for him. He took a seat and Ben asked, “How did it go out in the desert?”
“We found what we were looking for.”
    “And that was…?”
“We found the place where we’re going to ambush the Federales next year. That is, if I have all the equipment I asked for.”
Rudd glanced at a grinning Don Hoff.
“It just so happens that we called this meeting to inform you that we can get all the equipment and weapons you requested,” Hoff said. “We need to talk a little about where and when we want it delivered and stored.”
Ben discarded his chewed-up cigar and bit off the end of another. Striking a match on the underside of the table, he grinned. “You know, boys, this thing is coming together so fast that I’m beginning to get a little nervous. Rudd, you just got into town last Saturday, and here we are discussing where to store the equipment and guns.” Struggling to get his new cigar going and puffing between words, he blew out a big blast of smoke with a look of relief. “Since we’re moving along so nicely, maybe this is a good time to talk about when you’re going to want to bring your men in. I’ve been thinking that fifty tough-looking mercenaries showing up here at the same time will look pretty conspicuous to the locals.”
“I’ve been thinking the same thing.” Rudd nodded and looked around the table. “Do you think between Don’s, Bill’s, and your ranches north of the border that you can provide room and board for our little army?”
The two men nodded that they could.
“I’d prefer to have all fifty men here ninety days before the battle. We can house them at the ranches for a while, and then slowly bring them across the border a few at a time until we have about half staying in hotels until the last few days before the event.”
Ben puffed on his cigar and nodded. “When are you going to start recruiting?”
“Right away,” Rudd said. “To get the people I want, I have to start now.”
Ben took another drag on his cigar and allowed a sly smile to play over his lips. “Will you go back to San
