as calmly as I could. âWeâll get something there and find a private place to sit. Itâs been hours since weâve had any food, and I donât know about you, but these guys eat like theyâre in permanent training.â
âSo whatâs your excuse?â Corey said to me as we started out.
âItâs the cougar shifts,â Daniel said. âThey take a lot out of her.â
âAbsolutely,â I said, grinning at him.
Ash snorted. âItâll be awhile before you need to worry about that.â
âUm, no,â Corey said. âSheâs already shifting.â
Ashâs look darkenedâtelling me he wasnât shifting yetâand I quickly said, âItâs only been a few times.â
He glowered at me, as if I was bragging, then he fell back beside Corey and walked in silence behind me.
Great. Just great.
I inadvertently screwed up again at the café. Daniel, Corey, and I had pooled our money so we were taking turns grabbing stuff. Since it was my turn to buy, I naturally asked Ash what he wanted.
âI pay my own way,â he said, with a scowl that I was beginning to think was as much a part of his normal expression as Danielâs smile or Coreyâs grin.
âDo you want me to grab it for you?â I asked.
âNo.â
As he stalked off, we watched him go, making sure he didnât bolt.
âDonât let him get to you,â Daniel murmured. âWhatever his problem is, itâs not you. He just met you.â
âI know.â
He leaned closer, squeezing my hand, and whispered, âIâm sorry. I know this isnât how youâd pictured it.â
I could say that I hadnât pictured itâthereâd been too much going on for me to even think about my newly discovered brother. Yet that was a lie. I had thought about meeting him. Iâd thought about what it might be like to have a twin. Everyone said they shared a bond beyond mere blood.
I looked at Ash, standing in line, glowering.
Nope. No bond there.
I joined the line behind Ash. He must have known I was there but didnât turn, not even when I cleared my throat and said, âAsh?â
I tried again. âCan I, uh, ask you something?â
He glanced back. âWhat?â
âYou are by yourself, right?â
âSaid that, didnât I?â
Actually, no. Heâd never answered the question. But I didnât point that out.
âSo sheâs not with you,â I said. âOur, uh, mother?â
âNope.â
âYou left her behind?â
A look. One I couldnât decipher. âNot exactly,â he said, and turned away.
âIs she . . . dead?â
He paused so long I thought he wasnât going to answer. Then he said, âNo idea,â and stepped up to the counter to place his order.
NINE
M Y BROTHER HAD NO idea if our mother was alive or dead? That made no sense. Iâd been told sheâd kept him. Heâd grown up with her. Had he run away? Or was âno ideaâ just his way of saying âpiss offâ?
At the table, Ash ate his wrap, but not without complaint. Wraps? Seriously? In a park ? Where were the burgers and fries? Damned West Coast.
âSo where are you from, then?â I asked.
From the look he gave me, youâd think I was asking for his home address so I could send a death squad.
âAround,â he said.
âSo where did you get the email address?â I asked.
âFrom the person you gave it to, obviously.â
I shot a look at Daniel.
âWe called the number for Cyril Mitchell,â Daniel said. âThat was the emergency contact another skin-walker gave Maya. The woman who answered said he was dead. She claimed to be his daughter. Is that true?â
âYeah, heâs dead. Yeah, sheâs his daughter. But if you expected any help from that dumb bitch, youâre even more clueless than I
