away.â
âHave I been under surveillance?â
âYes. By my security team. Nothing sinister, I promise. I wanted to know how to reach you when the time came.â
The manâs open admission signaled this wasnât going to be a conversation of game-playing. At least not initially.
âWhy are you interested in me?â
âBecause Iâm interested in her.â Brentwood pushed open his door. âHear my proposal. Thatâs all I ask. Then weâll return to your building and Iâll be on my way.â
Mullins clicked the name into place. âYou head some computer company, donât you?â
âYes. Cumulus Cognitive Connections. Actually weâre high-level information systems and data management. I was alarmed and sickened by the murders at that conference, and I have reason to fear for Dr. Liâs safety.â
Perhaps more than the door to the car might be opening. âAll right. Mind if I bring my coffee?â
Brentwood laughed and slid over. âNot at all. Thereâs Blantonâs single-barrel bourbon in the bar if you need to add something a little more bracing than cream.â
Said the spider to the fly, Mullins thought. He got in, opted not to trap himself in the seatbelt, and closed the door. âSave the bourbon for another time. Youâve got my attention.â
Brentwood pressed an intercom button. âDrive us around the area,â he told the driver. âBut no farther out than ten minutes from Mr. Mullinsâ apartment.â He released the switch. âIs that satisfactory, sir?â
âYour wheels, your gas,â Mullins answered. âNow whatâs up?â
The limo pulled away from the curb and Brentwood leaned against the door to face Mullins.
âI want to hire you to protect Dr. Li.â
âWe can stop right now, Mr. Brentwood. Iâm not going to California.â
âOf course youâre not. Kayli and Josh are here.â
Brentwoodâs use of his daughterâs and grandsonâs names showed Mullins the man had done at least a preliminary background check.
âYouâll stay on the East Coast,â Brentwood continued. âThere will be some travel by private jet, but for only a few days at a time.â
âIs Jué Dé transferring Dr. Li?â
âJué Dé is out of the picture. Dr. Li will be working for me.â
âI understand sheâs here through the approval of the Chinese government.â
Brentwood waved his hand dismissively. âIâll handle the politics. Theyâll make a stink but nothing that wonât blow over.â
âSheâll be based in D.C.?â
âPart of the time. Part of the time sheâll be at one of our centers where we can implement her research.â
âWhen would I start?â
âAs soon as she agrees to join us. I can offer you two thousand dollars.â
âA week?â
âA day.â
Mullins made the calculation. Over half a million dollars a year to be a bodyguard. Overpayment, for sure. As soon as she agrees.
âIâm a lure,â Mullins said.
Brentwood chuckled. âYou can call yourself that, but you more than proved your value at the Marriott shootings. I believe Dr. Li still needs protection and Silicon Valley isnât the place for her. You saved her life once. Thereâs no one else who will make her feel more secure.â
The limo turned onto South Columbus and Mullins saw the brick building where Kayli lived in one of its four condos. Half a million dollars would more than pay for his grandsonâs education.
âWhy her?â Mullins asked. âYouâve got the connections and bankroll to snap up any scientist you want. Why is she so special?â
âAre you interested in the job?â
âNot without more information.â
Brentwood frowned and tapped his fingers while he mulled over how much to reveal and how much to conceal.
