have
died of the injuries as a default of their attack against you.”
Then he smiled and she frowned. He explained so
she would know that it was not her predicament that he thought
funny. “We hastened it.”
    Ember thought about that sentence.
At some point Kane had released her wrists and
simply held her against himself. He possessed a lovely heat that
warmed her to the marrow.
She looked up into a face with broad cheekbones
and a swath of inky hair and eyes to match.
She lifted a tentative hand and laid it like a
cool ointment of flesh against skin that was feverish to her
touch.
“Thank you,” Ember said as she burrowed against
him deeper.
    Kane's heart sped.
    The female had reached him.
    It was a dangerous circumstance.
He was to gather Demon females of sufficient
blood quantum and bring them back for Lucas to breed.
    That was all.
    Now it was not.
Trouble had come and its name was Ember.
He looked down at the Mer who lay curled naked
in his arms and his raging erection pushed against the female's
sleeping form.
He watched as her small fist latched onto his
rough tunic, the material the only one of its kind that wasn't
affected by the natural heat of his kind.
Her skin lay against his unaffected, where it
touched, the eternal flame of his flesh quieted.
Ember was his perfect match: Demon enough to
breed, Mer enough to cool his fire.
He would not give her up.
Kane could only fight so much.
    He would not battle himself.

CHAPTER 5

Hayden gazed at his leader. Actually, Lucas was
his leader. That didn't negate his deference to Kane, who currently
was under an almost-vampiric thrall with the newest breeder
acquisition.
He should report it immediately to Lucas.
However, Hayden knew that Lucas was otherwise engaged as he had
been most of the recent past; fucking the breeder, Alexandra.
It caused Hayden's full demon heart to grow
blacker. He'd grown dissatisfied with Lucas' position as High Demon
overseer. Only Lucas was allowed to sink his cock and tail spike
into the newest breeders. The other demons were relegated to a
dismal second... or third. Or an even more distant position.
It was enough to piss a Demon off.
Yet, it was as it had always been.
Hayden thought something was off with his
leader. He used the beautiful breeder, Alexandra, much too
frequently and he was well past his time with her.
She should have been given to the Demon Warriors
by this time to satisfy and reward them for their defense and
acquisition. However, that had not happened. Why? Hayden did not
know but he'd thought of something. And Lucas need not ever
know.
They could use this breeder as the human males
had and Lucas would be none the wiser. She was virgin pure. Lucas
could still fuck her chilled mermaid pussy and she would put out
his fire.
Hayden's cock swelled thinking about the rare
treat it would be for his molten flesh to be cooled with each
thrust inside the mixed-blood breeder, Ember. His tail vibrated
behind his back.
    He was ready.
Hayden faltered when his eyes met Kane's and his
gaze took in Hayden's prick, popped and standing at rigid
attention.
Hayden came at Kane with the element of surprise
and he dumped Ember in the pool, meeting Hayden's charge. His
second in command was overcome with demonic lust. Kane recognized
it even as he realized he'd been unprepared.
Ember awoke as she splashed into the water, her
temperature spiking as she came out of an exhausted sleep and her
vision was filled with the two demons, one so dark he appeared
black.
Their blood spilled like liquid grease as she
heard their flesh smack against each other, slicking the floor with
their violence.
Ember blinked the water out of her eyes,
searching for another way out. Finding none she rose out of the
water and grabbed the nearest piece of clothing she could find.
Recognizing it as hers she threw it on. It was still filthy from
her attack, but it covered her adequately.
She began to move through the maze of the In
Between; the
