been something out of an Old English gentlemanâs club. âYou can set her on the couch.â He pointed to the large overstuffed sofa.
Brendan placed a pillow behind Caitlinâs head and gingerly brushed hair from her face.
Edward cleared his throat. âKris is, uh, still in my car.â
Brendan winced and stood quickly.
Edward eyed him as he walked by. Brendan could feel it. He returned with the other girl, and Edward motioned to a love seat as he laid a blanket over Caitlin. âOver here.â
Although the girl wasnât tall, her legs still reached past the armrest. Taking a cue from Edward, Brendan found another blanket and draped it over her.
âSo, what do we do now?â Edward sat on the arm of the sofa, putting himself between Brendan and Caitlin.
Brendan looked Edward up and down, then in the eye.
âWhat?â Edward leaned back as his eyes twitched.
âYouâre staying here and watching over them,â Brendan said. âKeep your wards up and going till I come back. The oÃche mightâve tracked us here.â
âWhat are you going to do?â
Brendan let out a long sigh. Heâd been trying to put off the inevitable, but it wouldnât be ignored any longer. He wasnât going to find any useful information without an older friendâs help. âWell, Iâm off to have a bit of a chat with someone who might know about where the oÃche took the girl.â He turned and made for the door. Maybe there was another option though.
âWait a second.â Edward stepped in Brendanâs path.
âWe going to do this dance again, then, are we?â
âWould you please tell me whatâs going on here?â
âYouâre dense as a block of Connemara marble. I told you already, didnât I? FaerâÂâ
âYes, I heard you the other eight times. Faeries accosted Caitlin, then used her purse or something in it to get past some kind of protection and kidnap Fiona. But why would faeries take her?â
âIt donât matter.â
âWhat? Of course it matters! Does this kind of thing happen all the time?â
Brendan swallowed. âNot like it used to, butâÂâ
âLook, Iâm the closest thing she has to family.â He pointed at Caitlin. âI donât know anything about you, though.â
âEasy there, bucâÂâ
âNo!â Edward took a step closer. âMaybe you donât care why they took her daughter, but Iâve known that little girl since she was born. Sheâs like my own daughter.â
âWill it help get her back?â
âWhat?â
âWill knowing why they did it help get her back?â
âIt might, actually. Iâll be the first to admit I donât know much about all this, but I can help.â
Brendan laughed.
âYou dismiss me out of hand and Iâm just supposed to trust you with getting my friendâs daughter back?â
After watching Edward for a moment, Brendan half smiled and nodded. âAye, youâre right.â
âI, what?â Edward furrowed his brow. âI am?â
âTime is an issue here, boss. There are all kinds of things they could want the girseach for, but figuring out that kind of thing isnât what I do.â
Edward waited.
âI donât have time to go into it all, either way,â Brendan said. âYouâre right, youâve got no reason to trust me, but we need to get past that now, donât we?â
âI suppose youâre right.â Edward narrowed his eyes. âDo you swear?â
âWhat?â
âYou seem the sort who values honor and your word. Do you swear that youâre only in this to help Caitlin get her daughter back?â
âNo.â
Edwardâs face dropped.
Brendan smiled and stepped close. âIâm also interested in giving the oÃche a dose they wonât soon forget. And thatâs
