You’re a little minx when you want to be.”
“Am I?” She asked. She knew she was trying to entice him. Claire secretly hoped that he would slip up in front of Elise and have no choice but to acknowledge their relationship and admit to his feelings.
“You are. And I fucking love it,” he growled and her body responded with a shudder.
“Carter—,” she began, but the words died on her lips when he took her mouth in a searing kiss. His hand fisted in her hair, and his tongue slipped inside and tangled with hers. There was so much passion behind the kiss. She wanted more of it. More of him.
The sound of Elise and Bobby coming into the house had them breaking apart guiltily. Claire tried to nonchalantly wipe her mouth, but she knew it was no use. Her lips had to be swollen and red from that heart-stopping kiss.
“Sorry I was such a bitch,” Elise settled back on the couch and looked back and forth between the two of them. “What were you guys doing?”
Claire balled her hands into fists to hide the fact that they were shaking so badly. Could this be the moment she had longed for? Would Carter finally admit to wanting her for something other than a secret affair?
“We weren’t doing anything, sweetheart. Just talking about how ridiculous you were and how crafty Bobby was for winning the game,” Carter smoothly answered.
Elise’s eyes continued to dart between them suspiciously, but after several moments, she let it go with a shrug and suggested a card game instead.
Carter let out a weighted sigh and picked up his beer. That was close. Far too close for his liking. He had a feeling his daughter knew more than she let on, and that wasn’t good. He needed to cool things with Claire. They only had another week together. Instead of getting as much of her as possible, it looked like he was going to have to slowly wean himself off of her.

“Carter?” Claire’s low murmur made Carter jerk awake. He watched as a faint light filtered into the room and then the door closed silently behind her.
She walked hesitantly to the side of his bed and seated herself on the edge next to where he lay. Her body leaned towards his in a silent invitation. It was one he wanted to accept, but convinced himself he shouldn’t.
“You should go back to bed, especially after Elise almost caught us tonight.”
“I don’t want to. We only have a few more days together. I want to be with you.” Her hand reached out and settled on his chest. Without thinking he grabbed it and held it there.
“I care about you, Claire. More than I probably should. We went into this knowing it had an expiration date. Maybe we should cool it for the rest of the time you’re here. I don’t want Elise asking questions and assuming things. It would only drive a wedge between the two of you and I don’t get much time with her as it is. If she cut me out because of our affair, I’d never forgive myself.”
Claire’s heart broke at his words. She knew he had valid points, but she also knew she was far more optimistic than he was. It felt like she was constantly fighting an uphill battle with him. Not spending the remaining part of her vacation with him hurt too much to think about. She knew she was going to have to tell him what he wanted to hear so that she could still have a few more days of heaven.
“We’ll be more careful.” At his protest, she continued hurriedly. “Please don’t walk away yet. I couldn’t bear to spend the next few days knowing there was so much distance between us. Just give me a few more days. Please.”
She leaned in and kissed his lips, fanning the flames of Carter’s desire that never really went away thanks to her. He knew he should stop her, but he couldn’t. He would take one last offering from her and then do the right thing. He was too weak to stop her as her hand slid down his body and stroked him over his boxers.
“Just one last time,” he whispered against her lips. “This has to be it,
