life.â
âAnd now he has no life?â The vampireâs voice was hollow with doubts. âYou really killed someone? You?â
âWhy not?â she asked.
And even though his vision was still blurred, in his mind Liam could see her shrugging nonchalantly.
âBecause youâre too sweet. Too gentleâ¦â
Liam shuddered because he could tell, from the intimate tone of the manâs voice, that heâd stepped closer to her. That he might be touching herâ¦
Jealousy wound through him, quickening his pulse and renewing his strength. His vision cleared, the room righting itself. And he righted himself and sat up. He had to get to her, had to protect her no matter what she said.
âBut itâs the law of the society,â she said. âIf a human finds out about itâabout usâwe have to get rid of them. And Liam McKiernan wasnât just any human. He was the only human who knows how to kill us.â And now she was protecting her sister.
âHe nearly killed me,â Roger admitted. âBut he didnât get the stake in deep enoughâdidnât do enough damage that Doc Davison wasnât able to fix with a couple stitches and a transfusion.â
Damnâ¦
âHe wonât be a problem anymore,â Jennifer assured him. âYou can leave now.â
âNo,â he insisted. âNot without seeing his body for myselfâ¦â
âYou donât believe me?â she asked, as if surprised. âYou think youâre the only one who can kill for the society?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âIt was you who killed his brother, right?â she asked. âThe boy who was looking for me right after I was turned.â
âI had no choice, Jennifer,â Roger swore. âI only did it because I was protecting you.â
âI know that. I know now how you feel about me. Letâs get out of here.â
âWhat?â
âIâll leave with you,â she offered. âIâll go wherever you want me to go.â
And Liam had his answer. She was putting herself at risk for him. Mustering all his slowly returning strength, he vaulted himself out of the bed and yelled out, âNo!â
He couldnât let her sacrifice herself for him. He would rather dieâ¦and as the vampire rushed into the bedroom, he realized that he just mightâ¦.
Chapter Six
âNo!â Jennifer echoed Liamâs shout as Roger headed toward the bedroom. She flew at his back, pounding on him. Roger had to be weak yet from the stake, but he shrugged her off as if she were inconsequential.
As if she were powerlessâand she had been powerless for too much of her life. She launched herself at him, pulling at his hair and kicking and biting at his shoulders.
âDamn it!â he shouted. âI donât want to hurt you.â
âYou hurt me when you killed my friend,â she said. âAnd youâre going to hurt me again if you do any harm to Liam. Let him go. Just leave!â
âDonât you get it?â he asked, whirling on her, his soulless, black eyes full of a scary intensity. âI canât ever leave you. I canât ever let you go. You belong to me.â
She shook her head. âIâm not a possession. You donât own me.â
âIâm the reason youâre alive,â he reminded her. âI risked my own life when I told you about the society. And how do you thank me? You go to the professor. You could have got me killed.â
âI didnât know,â she said, defending her action. And she hadnât known then that if a vampire revealed the secret, he forfeited his immortality. She hadnât entirely believed that Roger had told the truth about being a vampire.
âYou owe me your life! Iâm going to take it, but first Iâm going to take his.â He turned back to the bedroom.
