idea!â
âThanks,â Lolli said. âMaxiâs owner canât afford surgery, and we wanted to help.â
âThis is Ace,â Janey blurted out as Ace jumped up on Mrs. Reedâs legs. âHeâs the one in the photos we sent. Heâs, um, a little excited today.â
âI can see that.â The woman chuckled and let Ace sniff her hand. âHello there, Ace. Arenât you a lively fellow!â
âYes, he has lots of energy,â Janey said. âThat means he could be a good therapy dog, right?â
âA therapy dog? Hmm.â Mrs. Reed looked at Kitty. âMaybe if he settles down a bit.â
âWhat do you mean?â Janey said. âI thought heâd need energy to go visit lots of places with you.â
âYes, but many of the people we visit are sick or elderly or both,â Mrs. Reed explained. âA dog thatâs too energetic can be too much for them.â She patted Ace. âHeâs a cute fellow, though. Iâm sure he could do lots of things. Maybe dog agility or something like that?â
Janey wasnât sure what to say. This wasnât turning out the way sheâd planned at all! How was she going to convince Mrs. Reed that Ace really was the perfect match for her?
âLook! Thereâs Matthew,â Adam said.
Zach saw him, too. âHey, he brought Maxi,â he said. âI hope heâs not making her run. Or even walk.â
âDoesnât look like it,â Adam said. âTheyâre just hanging out in the shade talking to people.â
The two boys hurried over. âHi,â Zach said. âI thought you werenât going to bring Maxi.â
âI couldnât stand to leave her home,â Matthew said. âAfter all, this is all for her! Besides, we havenât been spending enough time together since she had to stop running. I donât want her to be lonely.â He gave her a pat. âAnyway, my sister offered to walk with her dog in our place so we could just hang out.â
âThatâs good,â Zach said. âLook, I think Maxi likes Misha and Duke!â
The three dogs were circling one another, wagging their tails.
âOh, Maxi gets along with everybody,âMatthew said with a chuckle. âEven tiny dogs can boss her around and she doesnât mind a bit.â
Zach nodded, remembering how calm Maxi had been with Toby the cat in the clinic waiting room. âSheâs pretty chill,â he agreed.
âLook,â Adam said. âThere are Janey and Lolli.â
âAnd Mrs. Reed,â Zach added. He waved. âGuys! Over here!â
The girls and Mrs. Reed came toward them. Mrs. Reed was holding Pepper in her arms, while Ace frisked around and barked at Roscoe. Zach noticed that Janey looked kind of grumpy. But she looked that way a lot, so he didnât worry about it.
âThis is Maxi,â he told Mrs. Reed. âSheâs the one whoâs getting the surgery.â
âLovely to meet you, Maxi,â Mrs. Reed said. As she leaned down to give the big dog a pat, Pepper wriggled in her arms, sniffing curiously at Maxi.
âYou can put Pepper down,â Zach said. âMaxi wonât hurt him.â
âDonât worry,â Janey added. âIâll keep Ace away.â
âThank you, dear.â Mrs. Reed set the Chihuahua on the ground. Pepper trotted over and sniffed noses with Maxi. Both dogs wagged their tails.
âOh, and this is Matthew,â Lolli added.
âI know.â Mrs. Reed smiled. âGood to see you again, Matthew.â
âYou too, Prof,â Matthew said. Glancing at the kids, he grinned. âDr. Reed was my professor in college.â
âReally?â Zach was surprised. âYouâre a doctor?â
âA doctor of history,â Mrs. Reed said with a chuckle. âMatthew was one of my best students.â
As Matthew and Mrs. Reed chatted, Zach
