wandered over to Janey, who had taken Ace a short distance away. Adam and Lolli came, too. Kitty was sitting on a bench near them, talking to the shelter to see how things were going there.
âWhatâs with you?â Zach asked Janey.âArenât you having fun?â
Janey shrugged, staring at Ace as he jumped around playfully with Duke. âI thought Mrs. Reed and Ace were a perfect match,â she said. âBut Pepper doesnât seem to like him much. And Mrs. Reed thinks heâs too energetic to be a good therapy dog.â
âBummer,â Zach said. âBut donât worry, there are lots of other medium-sized dogs at the shelter. Maybe sheâll like one of them better.â
He glanced over at Adam to see what he thought. But Adam was staring back toward Mrs. Reed and Matthew. âDo you see that?â he said.
âSee what?â Zach looked where Adam was looking. Pepper was sitting between Maxiâs front legs. Maxi was peering down at the little dog, staying very still. Her tail thumped against the ground as she wagged it. Mrs. Reedâs hand was resting on the big dogâs head, her fingers idly scratching at Maxiâs ears as she talked to Matthew.
Zach looked at Adam, who was smiling. âI just had an idea,â Adam whispered to him. âLetâs go find your mom!â
Happily Ever After
By the time she finished the course, Janey was feeling happier. âAre you okay?â Lolli asked. âEven though Ace and Pepper didnât get along?â
âIâm fine,â Janey said. âAnyway, itâs not hopeless, right? Maybe we should try again on a less busy day. The two of them might get along better then.â
Lolli looked uncertain. âMaybe,â she said. âBut Iâm still not sure Mrs. Reed willââ
âHey!â Adam interrupted breathlessly, jogging up to them with Duke at his heel.Zach and Misha were right behind them. âWe need to talk to you about something.â
âWhat?â Janey asked.
Adam glanced over his shoulder. âDid you notice how well Maxi gets along with little Pepper?â
Janey frowned. Was he trying to rub it in? âYeah, we know,â she grumbled. âMaxi gets along with everyone.â
âExactly.â Zach grinned. âAnd we just checked with my momâshe says mastiffs often make good therapy dogs.â
âSo what?â Janey said. âMatthew doesnât have enough time to spend with Maxi as it is. Howâs he supposed to turn her into a therapy dog, too?â
âHeâs not,â Zach said. âMrs. Reed can do that!â
âHuh?â Lolli blinked.
âIt was Adamâs idea,â Zach said. âHe was thinking about how Matthew and Maxi are mismatched.â
Adam nodded. âItâs like Kitty was saying that time. Some dogs need certain kinds of homes.â
âAnd Matthewâs home is the wrong one for Maxi,â Zach went on. âMatthew loves to run, and he doesnât have much spare time.â
âBut running is bad for Maxi.â Janey was starting to get it. âSo what are you saying? That he should take Maxi to the shelter?â
âNo way! Heâd never do that,â Zach said. âBut he might give her to a home thatâs a better matchâespecially if he already knows her new owner.â
Lolli gasped. âMrs. Reed!â
âBut she wants a medium-sized dog,â Janey said. âMaxi is definitely not medium-sized.â
Zach shrugged. âShe wants a dog thatâs sturdy enough to visit kids. Maxi definitely is that. And she seemed to like her.â
âBut what about Ace?â Janey glanced at the black dog, who was trying to convince Misha to play with him.
The two boys traded a grin. âSheâs a little slow today, isnât she?â Zach commented.
Adam laughed. âDonât you get it?â he told Janey. âWe
