meet for coffee, and Gisele agreed. Since Micah had to go to the gym, she could take the opportunity to meet with her friend. After breakfast, she hugged Micah before he took off for his workout. Then she caught a cab to the café.
The shop had a downstairs area, plus a balcony level. Gisele found a seat upstairs. Having had her morning coffee, she switched to tea. When Abby came in, she leaned over the short wall and motioned to her. Her friend grinned and waved her hand.
Abby’s long blond hair was stylishly messy, and she wore oversized sunglasses with a black plastic rim, a trendy look. She came up the stairs, and as she walked over to the table, she pushed her glasses up on her head, like a headband.
Gisele stood and gave her a hug. “Good to see you.”
“I’m glad you were free to meet.” Abby took a seat, and when the server cruised by, she ordered an iced latte. Then she scrutinized Gisele.
“What?”
“It’s time to spill it.” Abby clasped her hands together on the table.
“Spill what?”
“I’m your best friend,” Abby said, “and I know you’ve been keeping something from me.”
“What makes you think that?”
Abby ticked off the items on her fingers as she spoke. “First, you canceled looking at locations for your Pilates studio, something you’ve looked forward to…like, forever .”
Gisele wondered how to explain that.
“ And ,” Abby said dramatically, “you didn’t move into your apartment. Which …I might blame Micah for. But …you haven’t picked up your clothes and taken them to your new place.” She took a breath. “You would have mentioned it if you had, because you’d need my help to figure out where to put everything.”
Gisele was caught, and no instant excuses came to mind.
The waiter provided a momentary reprieve by delivering Abby’s drink. Her friend unwrapped the straw then took a sip.
Abby brushed her hair over her shoulder, then looked directly at Gisele. “Leaving your wardrobe behind is a dead giveaway. I know something bad has happened.”
Gisele knew her expression betrayed her. It was hard to hide anything from Abby, as she knew her too well.
Abby put her elbows on the table, then leaned forward. “I’m your closest friend…you have to tell me what’s going on.”
“I don’t want to involve you,” Gisele said, with less conviction than she should have had.
But Abby wasn’t going to let it go. “Maybe I can help?”
Gisele hesitated. If she were in Abby’s place, she would want to know. Maybe it wasn’t fair to keep everything from her.
“Besides I’ve been seeing a lot of Luke, and he’s worried about something.” Abby took off her sunglasses and put them on the table. “I know it involves Micah, so I assume it has something to do with you. But Luke won’t tell me anything.” She stared at Gisele. “So you’ll have to.”
The way things were shaping up, Gisele might just need her friend’s help. Abby was no lightweight, and if she said she wanted to know, then she did. “If I tell you, it might put you in danger.”
“That means that you’re in danger.” Abby frowned. “You can’t leave me out of this. It’s better that you tell me than if I find out some other way.”
“I’ll tell you, but you might regret asking.”
“No…I won’t.”
Gisele glanced around. They were the only ones on the upper floor. She gathered her courage and proceeded to tell Abby everything . Her friend listened attentively, widening her eyes at the shocking parts, but she didn’t interrupt. It took some time, and before Gisele finished the long, alarming tale, they’d both finished their drinks.
“So my mother is still alive.” Gisele ended with that, and waited for Abby’s reaction.
“I’m so relieved for you, that you’ll have your mother back. Won’t you?”
“That’s what I want, so much,” Gisele said.
Abby furrowed her brow. “What are you going to do?”
“The first step is to see my mother, and make
