in Czech. The man jolted, his single working eye rolling up in surprise.
But he didnât speak.
âYou understood that,â Cian continued in the same language. âI asked if there are others with you. I wonât ask again.â
When he was met with silence, Cian struck out with enough force to have the prisoner slamming back against the wall, along with the chair he was chained to.
âFor every thirty seconds of silence, Iâll give you pain.â
âIâm not afraid of pain.â
âOh, you will be.â Cian jerked the chair and the man upright, kept his face close. âDo you know what I am?â
âI know what you are.â The man used his bloodied mouth to sneer. âTraitor.â
âThatâs one viewpoint. But the important thing to remember is that I can give you pain beyond what even such as you can stand. I can keep you alive for days, weeks, come to that. And in constant agony.â He lowered his voice to a hiss. âIâd enjoy it. So letâs begin again.â
He didnât bother to ask the question, as heâd warned he wouldnât repeat it.
âCould use a spoon,â he said conversationally. âThat left eye looks painful. If I had a spoon handy, I could scoop it right out of its socket for you. Of course, I could use my fingers,â he continued when that eye wheeled wildly. âBut then Iâd have a mess on my hands, wouldnât I?â
âDo your worst,â the man spat outâbut heâd begun to tremble a little. âIâll never betray my queen.â
âBollocks.â The shudders and sweat told him this one would be easily and quickly broken. âYouâll not only betray her before Iâm done with you, youâll do it dancing the hornpipe if I tell you to. But letâs just be quick and direct as weâve all better things to do.â
The manâs head jerked back as Cian moved. But instead of going for the face as his quarry anticipated, Cian reached down, gripped the manâs cock. And squeezed until there was nothing but screams.
âThereâs no one else! Iâm alone, Iâm alone!â
âBe sure.â Cian only increased the pressure. âIf you lie, Iâll find out. And then Iâll begin to cut this piece of you off, one inch at a time.â
âShe sent only me.â He was weeping now, tears and snot running down his face. âOnly me.â
Cian eased the pressure a few fractions. âWhy?â
The only answer was raw, rough gasps, and Cian tightened the vise of his fingers again. âWhy?â
âOne could slip through easily, unnoticed. Unâ¦unremarked.â
âThe logic of that has spared you, at least for the moment, from becoming a eunuch.â Cian strolled over, got himself a chair. After placing it in front of the prisoner, he straddled it. And spoke in conversational tones even as the man whimpered. âNow, this is better, isnât it? Civilized. When weâre done here, weâll see to those injuries.â
âI want water.â
âIâm sure you do. Weâll get you someâafter. So for now, letâs talk a bit about Lilith.â
It took thirty minutesâand two more sessions of painâbefore he was satisfied he knew all the man could tell him. Cian got to his feet again.
The would-be assassin was weeping uncontrollably now. Perhaps from the pain, Cian thought. Perhaps from the belief it was ended.
âWhat were you before she took you?â
âA teacher.â
âDid you have a wife, a family?â
âThey were no use but food. I was poor and weak, but the queen saw more in me. She gave me strength and purpose. And when she slaughters you, and theseâ¦ants who crawl with you, Iâll be rewarded. Iâll have a fine house, and women of my choosing, wealth and power.â
âPromised you all that, did she?â
âThat and more.
