you said hi!â Hollykit called after him.
âWhatever,â Lionkit grumbled, not looking back.
Â
Hollykit nosed her way through the brambles into the shadows of Leafpoolâs den. Jaykit was lying by the pool at one side of the den. He turned his jay-feather blue eyes on her as she entered.
âHi, Hollykit.â His mew sounded tired. His pelt was slicked flat with poultices, making him look as small as a newborn kit. Hollykit felt a stab of pain. He had nearly died.
Jaykit flicked his tail. âThereâs no need to feel so sorry for me,â he mewed.
Hollykit blinked. How was it that her brother always knew exactly what she was feeling? Sometimes it could be so annoying to have him sniffing out her private thoughts like an inquisitive mouse.
âIâm not going to die,â he went on.
âI never thought you would,â she lied. She padded to Jaykitâs side and smoothed the fur between his ears with her tongue.
âWhat did Firestar say?â Jaykit asked.
âWeâve got to stay in the nursery until he decides if we can become apprentices,â Hollykit told him.
â If? â Jaykit echoed.
âIf we do as weâre told and stay in camp, then I think weâll be okay,â Hollykit assured him. She hoped it was true. She had never seen Firestar so angry.
âIt has to be okay!â Jaykit struggled to his paws, then winced with pain.
âAre you all right?â Hollykit mewed in alarm.
Leafpool was mixing herbs in the far corner of her den. âHeâs just sore,â she meowed. âBut heâs healing well.â Leaving her work, she joined the two kits. âIâve been giving him comfrey to chew on.â
âIs that what you were mixing there?â Hollykit asked.
âI like to mix in a few heather flowers when I have them,â Leafpool explained. âThe nectar sweetens the mixture and makes it easier to swallow.â
âHow did you learn all that?â Hollykit mewed, genuinely curious.
âCinderpelt taught me,â Leafpool answered. There was sadness in her voice as she spoke about her mentor, but Hollykit was more interested in Leafpoolâs skill. Having so much knowledge must make her feel very powerfulâno other cat in the Clan knew herbs like she did. She had cured Brackenfur and Birchfall and now Jaykit. Imagine being that important to the Clan .
âLeafpool?â Brightheart called from the den entrance. âBrackenfurâs coughing again.â
âIâll give you some honey to take to him,â Leafpool replied. âCan you see to Jaykit for me, Hollykit? A wash will help his stiffness. Just avoid the poultice patches.â
âOkay.â Hollykit wrinkled her nose at the thought of putting her tongue near the tangy-smelling goo plastered over her brotherâs pelt. But she began to wash him anyway as Leafpool fetched a leaf wrap of honey from the back of the den and gave it to Brightheart.
âNot so roughly!â Jaykit complained. âIâm sore all over.â
âSorry,â Hollykit apologized, lapping Jaykitâs pelt with softer strokes.
âYouâre not as gentle as Spottedleaf,â Jaykit moaned.
Hollykit stopped licking. âWho?â
âSpottedleaf,â Jaykit repeated. âLeafpool says sheâs one ofour warrior ancestors. She came to me in a dream and poked me all over with her nose.â
âHow can you dream about a cat if youâve never met her?â Hollykit asked, puzzled.
Leafpool padded back from the den entrance and sat down. âAre you telling Hollykit about Spottedleaf?â
Jaykit nodded.
âWho is she?â Hollykit mewed.
âShe was the ThunderClan medicine cat when Firestar first joined the Clan,â Leafpool explained. âShe died before I was born, but she comes to my dreams just like she did with Jaykit.â Hollykit noticed that the medicine catâs eyes were
