against one of the posts before his body fell to the ground. Morgan pushed to her feet, limbs shaking, pain pursing her mouth into a tight line. She seemed on the edge of control as she stood, stumbling her way over to him. She stared down at his limp form, kicking him once in the head before going to her knees and rummaging through the man’s pocket.
Hamilton huffed beside Wolfe, clinging to the bars as if they were a lifeline. “God damn, girl. You could have gotten yourself killed.”
She barely spared him a quick glance. “Like you’d care either way.”
“Of course we care. Why the hell do you think we tried to distract the creep? We’re not like them.”
“Right. Because everyone offers up a camp full of women.”
“That was bullshit, and you know it.”
She actually laughed this time. “Fine. You’re all upstanding gentlemen who wouldn’t dare take advantage of a lady.” She snorted out her breath. “Save it. I’m not naïve, and I’m sure as hell not stupid.”
“Then you know the truth when you hear it…Morgan, right?”
She yanked something out of Bobby’s pocket, looking over at them as she fumbled with the set of keys, trying to open the small lock on her cuffs. “Names don’t mean anything these days.”
“I’m Hamilton. This is Gunner and Wolfe. And they mean something to us.”
“Sure. Which explains why you interfered last night.”
“I didn’t interfere. I was trying to help you.”
She paused, sweat beading her brow as she locked gazes with them. “Didn’t exactly turn out great, now did it?”
Wolfe chuckled. “Damn, sweetheart. You sure don’t give an inch, do you?”
“Which one are you? Gunner or Wolfe?”
“Wolfe. And I’m impressed you remembered our names, since they don’t mean anything anymore.”
“Like I said. I’m not stupid. Fuck!” She stopped fiddling with the keys, bowing her head as her mouth clenched shut.
Wolfe sighed. “Your muscles haven’t recuperated enough to do that kind of fine-motor control. You’ll never get it open before another one of Beau’s men show up.”
“Tell me something I don’t know.” She took a few deep breaths, levering up until she could lean against the post. “Doesn’t matter. I can undo them once my dexterity returns.”
Wolfe scoffed at her. “So you’re going to try and escape handcuffed?”
Anger flared in her eyes as she stared at him. “I’d rather die trying than stay and be shuffled off to give that bastard what he wants. What he thinks he deserves just because he’s bigger and stronger than most. Not that I’d mind the beating I’d give him first.”
“I’m sure you’d give the guy a thrashing. But why do either when we’re more than willing to help you out. Just give Hamilton the keys and we’ll see you safely out of here.”
“Right. You and what army? Oh, I forgot. You used to be in the ‘reserves’.” She made the quotes in the air with her bound hands. “What a crock of shit.”
Wolfe couldn’t help but smile. Damn this girl was something else.
Hamilton huffed. “We’re wasting time. You know damn well we’re far more than just army reserve. And if it weren’t for those snipers Beau had on the roof last night, we would have walked away then—you with us. But what’s done is done.” He released a slow breath. “Please, Morgan. I give you my word.”
“Trust is earned. And I’ve got no reason to trust any man.”
Wolfe cursed. “Oh for fuck’s sake. Pick up Bobby’s baton then get over here. If we so much as look at you funny you can shock the ever loving fuck out of us. But you’re not going to get far without some backup, sweetheart. Trust me. We cased this place for four days. Beau’s got more security than you think.” He maintained eye contact, all too aware that if he let her look away, they’d be stuck there as she walked out the door. “Hamilton’s telling you the truth. We won’t hurt you.”
Emotions crossed her features as she looked
