bitch looks like up close and personal,â Ice stated as they drove by Lacy. âShe ainât nothing like yoâ mama. Nah.â Ice shook his head and smiled at the thought of Melody. âYoâ mama one of a kind, loyal and true to this shit. That ho Lacy, any nigga spittinâ the right game at her could scoop her young, dumb ass up when I turn my back. She ainât got no street smarts and when you ainât got that, you ainât got shit out here!â Iceâs words lingered in the air. âAlways remember that,â he added abruptly as he pulled over and double-parked.
Jewels nodded for a second time. For the first time, she had really listened to Ice. He talked like her mother but rougher and rawer. It made sense. And the way he spoke about her mother, convinced Jewels that he actually did love her. When Jewels looked up, she saw her mother approaching her fatherâs car. The clicking sound of the Lexusâs doors was Jewelsâs cue. She opened the car door and started to climb out.
âHey.â
The grip of Iceâs hand stopped Jewels in her tracks. She turned back and looked at him.
âYou gonna be one of a kind too!â Ice shot her a wink, followed by a loving smile. âRemember I told you that.â He released her arm.
Jewels didnât know what to say, so she didnât say anything. She exited her fatherâs car and was met with a big hug from Melody. She couldnât help but look back at her father one last time before he pulled off. She had no way of knowing it would be the last time she would see him alive.
She would never forget how the young pimp Slim had taken him away from her and her mother. Her trip down memory lane as she reminisced about the first connection she and her father had made was cut short by the sound of a voice, followed by the touch of her arm. Jewels jerked back.
âWhoa!â Rome threw his hands up submissively. âYou good over there?â Rome questioned.
She stared at him, wide eyed. His voice had startled her, and it had brought her back to reality. A sense of embarrassment swept through her.
He was staring at her.
She cleared her throat. âYes, Iâm fine. Why are you staring at me?â
Rome shook his head in disbelief. âBecause I told you we were here three times, and you still ainât said shit.â He chuckled.
Jewels looked around and then forward. She hadnât even noticed they had stopped. She wondered how long he had been watching her. He was pulled in front of the gated community she lived in.
âExcuse me. Itâs been a really long night,â she offered as an explanation for why she had zoned out. What else could she say? She knew she couldnât tell a total stranger, a killer at that, that he had just made her pussy throb and get wet. She was convinced the chances of them ever seeing each other again were slim to none, and she felt that was for the best. âI just wanna put all this behind me.â
Before Rome could say anything, Jewelsâs phone rang. She looked down at it in her lap. She hadnât realized she had five missed calls from the agency and double that number from Sassy. There was no doubt in her mind that they knew about the trick back at the hotel. But how? she wondered. She looked over at Rome.
âGo ahead.â He shrugged.
Jewels grimaced. She unlocked the screen on her phone and took a deep breath before answering. âHey, girl,â she greeted Sassy. Her voice cracked a little, but she doubted Sassy would notice.
Sassy asked her if she was okay. Jewels could tell by Sassyâs tone that she had heard about the hotel incident.
âYeah, Iâm okay. Why you ask? I didnât even know you was calling my phone,â she admitted.
In her peripheral vision, Jewels could see that Rome was both watching and listening as Sassy wasted no time telling her what she knew. She could practically feel his heat on the
