hair was pulled back into a severe bun at the nape of her neck, and she wore a pair of thick tortoise shell glasses. Travis sat down in the waiting room behind me and began leafing through a magazine.
“Yes, hello Mrs. Randolph, please fill out these forms,” she said. I met her eye and she smiled, before sliding the clipboard over to me. “The doctor will see you shortly.”
I nodded solemnly and took a seat. The waiting room was almost empty, outside of another man sitting silently in the corner. He was huge, with short, sandy blonde hair and light green eyes. He looked over at me quickly before his eyes darted over to Travis. Quickly, he raked his gaze over Travis’s body, appearing to size him up before looking back down at his phone. He wore a long sleeve shirt, but I saw a tiny bit of ink peeking out of the edge of his sleeve.
I’d made that phone call in complete faith, but now that I was sitting here, I had no idea what to expect, or even what kind of people I’d called for help. The man sitting there was big, gruff, and extremely intimidating. My heart raced with fear but then I remembered Royce and what an evil bastard he was.
My life couldn’t get any worse.
All I had was faith and I’d best hold on to it as much as I could if I wanted to get through this. I looked down at the papers the woman at the front desk handed me and saw that they were normal medical intake papers. I began to fill them out, but stopped short when it asked for my name. The last thing I wanted to do was write down Vanessa Randolph, but I did it anyway, just in case Travis looked over my shoulder. I scribbled the name hastily, hoping it was the last time I’d ever have to do that.
Travis wasn’t paying any attention to me at all, though, and I was extremely happy about that. All I had to do was get past that door without him and I was free.
I jumped when I heard the door open. The receptionist was standing there with a warm smile.
“Mrs. Randolph? The doctor will see you now,” she said.
I nodded, rising slowly, holding my bag close to my side. I’d taken two steps when Travis rose behind me. Panic gripped my heart and I looked over to the woman with wild eyes.
“Are you Mr. Randolph?” she asked, stepping between us gracefully, her voice clipped and professional.
“Uh…no,” Travis replied, gruffly. “I’m not.”
“I’m sorry, sir, only patients and immediate relatives are allowed in the treatment rooms,” she said, flashing him a big smile.
“Right,” Travis squinted his eyes, looking at me with a silent warning. “That’s fine. I’ll wait here.”
“Shouldn’t be long,” she replied cheerily, holding the door while I walked in. Travis turned and sat back down.
Anxiety ripped through me as I followed her down a long hallway and she led me into a room that looked like a perfectly normal doctor’s office.
“Dr. Evans will be right in,” the girl said loudly, smiling at me again and then closing the door. My hands were shaking, my legs were shaking, hell, my entire body was shivering in fear at this point. I sat there for what was probably one minute, maybe two, but it felt like an eternity. My head raced with terrifying thoughts, of everything that could go wrong, of everything Royce would do if he found out.
Stop it, I told myself. Think positive. Don’t manifest the bad shit.
When a knock sounded at the door, I jumped like I’d been shot. I was so on-edge that I was on the verge of fainting, my stomach filled with butterflies, my palms sweating.
“Come in,” I called, my voice shaking, along with my hands. But when I saw the face and warm smile of the woman that walked in the door, all of that went away. She was tiny, blonde and had the clearest, kindest green eyes I’d ever seen.
“Vanessa, I’m Grace,” she whispered, reaching out her hand. I grabbed it and shook it slowly. “We’re going to get you out of here. Are you ready?”
With wide eyes, I nodded slowly, gripping my
