around longer than anyone else. Since I realized you could put up with the worst from me – and I’m always at my worst around other people, as you know – and still be the happy, easy going person you are. But you were otherwise attached at that point, and I was, and still am for the most part, married to my work. The time hasn’t been right until now.”
“It’s not right now, either,” Jodi countered, “considering that I still want to kill you, and now I’m not even worried about whether or not I can get away with it. I’m in it for the pure satisfaction!”
She didn’t look as if she was kidding in the least, and Cayson decided just to do what he wanted to, in hopes of distracting her from her murderous intent. He leaned down and cupped her cheek, kissing her passionately, as if it was the first time they’d ever done that and he wanted to make a very good impression on her, which wasn’t too far off from the truth. His confidence was buoyed when she didn’t resist. She didn’t actually kiss him back, but she wasn’t screaming bloody murder, either.
In fact she was actually panting slightly, her pupils dilated, and he could see a somewhat reddish tinge to her face. She was excited, regardless of whether or not she wanted to admit it, and he intended to use that to his advantage.
When he’d asked the agents to procure clothes for them, and had, of course, given them the right sizes for the both of them – Cayson very consciously hadn’t asked them to buy her any bras. He had a hard time asking for panties, even, but he guessed Jodi might catch on to his intent if he didn’t have them get those. He could see through the thin material of the tee shirt – the one of his he had left in her bureau, he recognized – that her nipples were peaked, and that gave him the first real hope that he might have a chance with her even though he’d managed to really piss her off twice already.
It seemed like that was a hazard of being him, and he only hoped that she could see her way past it, that he didn’t mean any harm to her and certainly never meant to hurt her in any way. He’d have to curb his natural curiosity about her; he wanted to know everything about her, and although she wasn’t anywhere near as guarded or naturally reticent as he was, she still wasn’t all that forthcoming about herself.
Or was that because of a lack of overt interest on his part? He hadn’t considered that before. He’d never really inquired about her life much, as she hadn’t pushed him for details about his, although she naturally knew more about him because of everything she did for him.
He made a mental note to try to get her to talk to him about herself, but for right now, all he could think about was how wonderful she felt in his arms. It had been a long time between women for him; sex had never been much of a priority in his life. Even when he’d found her and he knew that she was the woman he wanted as his own, he still couldn’t quite bring himself to pull the trigger and ask her out. The whole dating scene just seemed so trite to him and she was so much more than that to him, even before he’d discovered just how compatible they really were. It was so much easier just to bury himself in work and give her exorbitant raises every year so that he could be sure she’d stick around.
Then he’d stepped on himself twice – badly, both times – and he knew that that had set her to looking for somewhere else to work, which scared him into action. He’d been through dozens of PAs before her, some of whom had gotten to the point – within mere hours of knowing him – of threatening to kill him.
It wasn’t just their working relationship, of course. He wanted more than that, much more, from her, and he saw an opportunity to get just that, if he played his cards right. It was weird, but when the government had appeared on his doorstep that morning, he knew it was going to be just the ticket he needed – lots of
