she wondered if you
needed any information yourself.” Dare suddenly remembered he had specifically
asked Mrs. Davis to be available to his young duchess when he brought her to
the estate. Poor woman!
    “Oh! Well, a few days
ago that would have been very useful! Though I don’t think her description was
very accurate you know,” she added thoughtfully.
    He rolled his eyes,
“What exactly did she tell you?”
    “That I must lie very
still and endure your attentions. It’s a wife’s unpleasant duty…”
    “A very flattering
attitude about her employer!” he muttered, wondering if he should get an
entirely new staff.
    “So, I take it this
means not all men are as…skilled in the bedroom as you?”
    He
tried not to preen. “No,” he answered honestly. Though knowing her as he did
now he quickly realized he should never have let his guard down.
    “And where did you
acquire this experience?” she demanded.
    “It is none of your
business!” he shot back.
    “I think it is,” she
murmured. “After all, you wished to know about my footman.”
    “It’s hardly the same
thing.”
    “Perhaps
not,” she mused, scrutinizing him for a moment in a way that truly unnerved
him. “Would you like me to lick you all over tonight?” she asked slowly sipping
the glass of wine in her hand. He watched her lips, and instantly became hard.
    Dare was stunned, when not
only did she proceed to assist him in undressing, but when she had him spread
eagled on the bed, she touched something cold and wet to his body. “What is
that?” he asked.
    “A very delectable
lotion,” she whispered.
    “It smells of peaches.”
    “Yes, it tastes
delicious too.” She swiped her tongue across his navel, and slowly slipped
lower. He groaned in an agony of desire. Later taking the bottle of lotion from
her he turned it over in his hands.
    “Where did you get
this?”
    “I purchased it from
one of the maids at the inn.”
    “You discussed sex with
them?” he shouted.
    “You
were downstairs a very long time,” she stated matter-of-factly.
    He ran a hand through
his hair. He wasn’t sure whether to be highly amused or worried. Had she no
sense? He wondered if he should employ a companion to keep an eye on her. As well as firing the footmen and the
housekeeper? A small inner voice taunted. His delight in all that they had
shared suddenly diminished a little.
    “Perhaps you are not
aware that many of the maids at the Inn share their bodies for coin?” she asked
him, suddenly sounding far more knowledgeable than she ought.
    “Yes, I am aware of
that,” he said warily, unnerved by the way she was watching him.
    “Oh, I see. This is
something that you have partaken of?”
    “Daizie! This is not…”
“Not my concern? And why not?”
    “It
is unseemly for you to question your husband.”
    “But
not unseemly for me to lick you from head to toe?”
    “I did return the
favor,” he said with a grin hoping to divert the conversation.
    “And very well too,”
she admitted.
    “Thank you!” he
laughed.

    Chapter Five

    Dare stayed at the
estate for a full week. Mrs. Davis appeared to have recovered her equilibrium
somewhat, but allowed the senior housemaid to attend Daizie. He hired a
companion for her. A trustworthy gentlewoman, who would ensure she did not get
into any trouble. The footmen were reassigned to work in the grounds, and the
house contained only women.
    “I am going to London
for a few days,” he announced.
“I would like to come with
you,” she suggested hopefully.
    “Not on this trip,” he
answered, sorry to see the hopeful light in her eyes dim a little. She had to
settle into her new life sometime, he sighed. His initial plan had simply been
to acquire a wife, get a child on her and return to his normal day to day life
in London. He hadn’t counted on a wife like Daizie.
    “Very well, perhaps
next time?”
    He nodded and leapt
astride his horse and galloped away with Wynne.
