escape the uneasy feeling that someone was watching him, everywhere
he went. But whenever he turned he saw no one. He completed his business in
London and was relieved when he could return to his estate and Daizie, this
time, alone. Wynne was staying behind. His body ached with longing for her. He was
lucky, Wynne had told him on the night before he left, he had his own little
courtesan right there in his bed at the estate, what did he need a mistress
for? Wynne was right. But it wasn’t just in physical ways he missed her he was
surprised to realize. She was sweet and playful, and yet becoming quickly
sophisticated in the bedroom. He could make a life with Daizie even though he
might have to rein in a little of her unconventional behavior, with Daizie in
his arms, he could be truly happy.
He was disturbed to
enter the great hall to find the footmen once again at their posts. His blood
began to boil. He ran up the stairs, flinging open the door to her room. She
sat beside the fire, her companion beside her, reading. She was
uncharacteristically dressed in a high-necked gown of red velvet trimmed with
ermine, her cape sat beside her. Was she going out?
“What is the meaning of
this?” he bellowed.
“Of what, husband?” she
asked quietly, her tone subdued.
She had never spoken to
him this way before. Something odd was going on here. “The footmen, I sent them
to work on the estate, I didn’t want you around them…” he admitted.
“Jealous?” she asked
coldly.
“Yes,” he admitted
frankly. “Your judgment is not sound where men are concerned.”
“You are correct, it is
not,” she admitted meaningfully, staring boldly at him. “That is why I am
leaving. I appear to have misjudged you completely. Did you enjoy your visit
with your mistress?”
“How did you know…what
do you mean you are leaving?”
“I
had you followed. I am leaving you. I have decided to go to London by myself.”
“I won’t allow it!” He
felt that they were having two conversations at the same time. “Why-how did you
have me followed? And by whom?”
“I paid one of the
footmen to follow you Dare, he was afraid he might be about to lose his job. He
needed the money.”
“How much do you know?”
“I
know that you visited your mistress! From my bed to hers? I won’t have it!”
“Oh, you won’t?” he
asked quietly. “And yet you brought all five footmen back into my house against
my wishes.”
“It is their job Dare,
surely one small inquisitive kiss has not made you afraid I will seduce them
all? We are married. Do you have no faith in me?”
He blushed to the roots
of his hair. She folded her arms across her chest, unconsciously pushing it up fuller
and higher. He stared. He wanted her, but apparently she didn’t want him.
She drew in a deep
breath. “Since I evidently cannot hold your attention, I have decided to go to
London alone. I will become a courtesan.” She said it so conversationally he almost
didn’t take in her meaning. “If you wish to see me, you will have to pay for
the privilege, as will anyone else. But I thank you for the… er very
fascinating and informative … lessons .
I shall put them to good use.”
“What?” he roared. “You
cannot!” The very thought of her sharing what she shared with him with anyone
else sickened him.
“How
will you stop me Dare? Lock me in my room forever?”
“You belong to me!”
“No.”
She picked up her
reticule and cape and began to exit the room. He caught her shoulders, her eyes looked sad and shadowy. His heart lurched. He loved her!
“Don’t leave me Daizie,
please!”
“If you are going from
my bed to that of your mistress and back, I may as well be a courtesan. I think
perhaps I will like the life…it will be so much less… restricting! I will not
be confined alone to the country estate, and I will choose my own lovers...run
my own household...not in the best part of town of course, but it will have its
compensations! I shall
