. Iâd sit in her studio and read, or sheâd listen to me ramble about my teenage woes. She wore womenâs suits and leather gloves and hats as though there were a 1940s motorcade waiting.
Bendrix gave her a tour of the dating site while she looked on. âLove and romance as algorithm. Interesting.â When he showed her Relaxinâs photo she said, âA photo doesnât mean much until you meet a person and can look him in the eye.â
âSheâs not looking for a conversation,â cracked Bailey.
âJoanâs right,â said Rita. âBut if youâre going to look him in the eye, Abbey, you need to contact him. Right, Bendrix?â
âYes,â said Bendrix. âWe need to make contact and send him a note. See what he says.â
I looked around the room. âDo I get a say in any of this?â
âNot really,â Bendrix said.
âWrite and tell him Abbey hasnât had a good lay in four years,â said Bailey. âThat should get his attention.â
I leaned back against the couch. âI donât know,â I moaned. âHeâs cute, butââ
âBuuuuut . . .â Bailey dragged her mouth for all it was worth. âThis is exactly what happens when you stop having sex. You become a whiner, bringing everybody down.â
âYou only live once,â offered Rita.
âAnd your life is passing you by,â said Bendrix. âI have no idea who youâre looking for if not someone like this. As far as I can tell, the only thing wrong with him is that heâs straight.â
âI guess.â I looked at Joan.
âDo what you want.â She shrugged. âDoesnât matter what anyone else thinks. This is your life, not ours.â
I gazed around the room until Bailey sat up and sighed. âGoodness, child, youâre not marrying the guy. Just send him a damn note.â
âOkay, okay! Forgive me for wanting to think this through.â I wiggled my fingers at Bendrix and he handed me the tablet. âWhat should I say?â
Bailey laughed. âTell him heâs fine as hell and you want to fuck his brains out.â
Rita clicked her tongue. âEven after all these years . . .â She crossed her legs, looking peeved. Baileyâs loud mouth, in other words, still riled her at times.
I took a moment to gather my thoughts. âLetâs see . . . âDear RelaxinbytheBay, in the world of online dating, you seem like a find. I hope you like my profile and I hear from you soon. Sincerely, Abbey.ââ
âI love it,â said Rita.
âShort, sweet, and to the point,â said Bendrix. He moved my hand aside and clicked âsendâ before I had a chance to reread thenote, edit the note, or otherwise chicken out. âThatâs that. Now, what do you say we join the party?â He rose from the couch and extended his hand to Rita.
âWe need to work on you next, Benny,â she said. âWe canât let your good looks go to waste. Itâs time you started thinking about settling down.â
âYeah, Bendrix,â I said sarcastically. âHow long has it been since Anthony?â
He stood erect as soon as I dropped the A-bomb. He pulled his shoulders back and tilted his chin upward like an aristocrat speaking to his servants; sometimes Bendrix could be so haughty he seemed best suited for coat, tails, and a monocle over one eye. âThis isnât about me,â he said, going for his tablet.
âIt should be,â I said. âWord on the street is that you only live once.â
âWell, I . . . at least Iââ
Bailey shot up from the couch, saving him from having to finish with the bull. âDinah is ruining my song,â Bailey shot out. âYou all hear that?â
My sisterâs voice seeped up through
