could both get sapphire birthstones.â
âMaybe we could turn it off,â Amelia said peevishly. âI would really like to sit in the quiet and maybe sleep.â
Rebecca frowned. âAgain? But you just woke up from a nap. Are you truly that tired?â
â Jah, Iâm tired. Iâm in pain, too.â She barely refrained from rolling her eyes. âMy leg is broken, sister.â
Darla clicked off the remote. âSorry, dear. Would you like us to leave?â
âI really would.â She hated to be so blunt, but anything less wouldnât make them leave.
âOh.â Rebecca frowned. âThatâs too bad. I thought we could keep you company so you wouldnât be lonely.â
âI donât know why you are so concerned about that now. You all practically pushed Simon out of the room.â
Her sister raised her eyebrows. âHe shouldnât have been here, Amelia.â
âWhy?â
âYou know why.â
âBecause heâs a man? I donât think he was going to try anything untoward. I have a broken leg. Besides, I owe Simon a lot. After all, he was the one who rescued me.â
âHe shouldnât have been at our farm in the first place,â Rebecca retorted. âI told him to stay away from you.â
âYou shouldnât have told him such things. He wasnât being disrespectful. He wants to court me.â
Rebecca bit her lip and looked away.
Frustrated, Amelia turned to her sister-in-law. âWhat does Lukas think?â
âOh, well, I probably shouldnât say,â Darla said hesitantly.
âThis is my life. How would you feel if your siblings were telling you what to do?â Amelia knew sheâd struck a chord. Mere months ago, Darlaâs brother Aaron had treated Darla terribly. If Lukas hadnât stepped in, well, things could have gone very bad.
âLukas doesnât want Simon courting you,â Darla finally said.
âObviously. But I donât see why Lukas is so against Simon. Actually, I donât see why my personal relationships are any of his business.â
Darla flushed. âYou know how brothers are. They like to interfere.â
âI agree, but Lukas is being unreasonable.â
âSimon ainât suitable, Amelia,â Rebecca said. âIâm sure youâve heard the rumors about him.â
âAbout his rumspringa ?â
â Jah, Iâm talking about his rumspringa . And everything else,â Rebecca said. âSimon didnât just go out and watch movies when he left Charm. He went wild. He drank. He did drugs. Some people say that he was arrested.â
Amelia had actually heard such things, too. Sheâd done her best to ignore the rumors. âIâd rather you not gossip about him.â
âItâs not gossip if Iâm voicing my concern. Heâs too worldly.â After exchanging a glance with Darla, Rebecca said, âThe good news is that he understands now.â
âSimon understands what?â she asked slowly. Feeling panicked, she looked at both women. âWhat, exactly, did Lukas say?â
Looking increasingly uncomfortable, Darla played with the folds on her dress. âIâm not sure,â she said.
âBut whatever he said made an impression,â Rebecca said. âI think Simon understands that he needs to simply be your friend from now on.â
If Amelia could have gotten to her feet and yelled in frustration, she would have. âI really canât believe all of you are focusing on such things today. Iâm lying here injured, but all any of you care about is Simonâs unsuitable courtship.â
Rebecca folded her arms over her chest. âIt werenât much of a courtship. He was sneaking around . . . as you know.â
âSimon did not sneak.â
Darla nodded. â Jah . But donât be mad at Lukas, Amelia. Heâs only doing what is
