cold!â
âIâm going to ask him!â Jennifer announced, hurrying back into the kitchen.
Will had put the pizza box on top of the table. Sheba had already jumped onto a chair and was pressing her nose to the box, whiskers twitching. Jennifer shooed her away and she jumped back down on the floor, meowing.
âThatâs fifteen dollars,â Will said.
âFifteen dollars,â Jennifer repeated, opening up her wallet.
âI thought you said you didnât have any money in that wallet,â Will pointed out.
Jennifer laughed as she scrambled to say something that made sense. âMy wallets are identical. I liked this one so much, I had to have two of them. Itâs a girl thing.â
âWhatever.â
Jennifer handed Will the money for the pizza, along with a generous tip. Will counted the bills and then folded them, putting them in his back pocket. He gave Jennifer a smile for the tip. âThanks! Enjoy the pizza.â
Violet nudged Jennifer. âHeâs leaving! If youâre going to ask him, ask him!â
âSo listen!â Jennifer called out. âI know youâre going to think this sounds crazy, but I need you to be my boyfriend.â
Will turned around and stared at Jennifer, his blue eyes wide with disbelief. âExcuse me?â
âIâve gotten myself into this . . . situation,â Jennifer explained, trying not to squirm. âI told someone that I have a boyfriend. Which obviously I donât otherwise I wouldnât be standing here asking you to be my boyfriend.â
âAnd why are you asking me? Why not some other guy?â
âBecause youâd be perfect,â Jennifer admitted. âEvery girl at North Ridge High would love to go out with you.â
Will folded his arms across his chest and Jennifer couldnât help but notice how muscular they were, even underneath all that flannel. âHave you ever wanted to go out with me?â he asked.
âI never really thought about it.â
âSo why now?â
Jennifer sighed. âBecause I have to find someone by Friday.â
âWhy Friday?â
âThatâs the deadline for essays for the Most Romantic couple contest,â Violet piped in.
Will held up a hand. âWait a minute. Slow down. Not only do you want me to pretend to be your boyfriend, but you want us to compete as Most Romantic?â
âYes,â Jennifer admitted.
âIt sounds like youâve gotten yourself into a mess,â Will said. âYou should be careful about what you say.â
âShe speaks without thinking,â Violet told Will. âItâs a bad habit.â
Will turned to Jennifer. âYou should work on that.â
âI will. In the future. I promise. But right now I need your help.â She bit down on her lower lip, praying that Will would take pity on her. âWill you help me?â
âI donât even know you!â Will exclaimed.
âWe can get to know each other,â Jennifer suggested. âItâs only for a week. Until Valentineâs Day. After that, youâre free!â
Will sighed and ran a hand through his hair. The smooth black strands fell back into place. âLook, you seem nice, but I donât like lying to people. Itâs not my style.â
âIs that the only reason?â Jennifer asked.
âWhat do you mean?â
âMaybe thereâs another reason. Maybe you donât want people thinking youâre off the market.â
Will shrugged. âWell, there is that, too. I like keeping myself in circulation. Sorry, I wish I could help you out, but I donât do girlfriends, real or fake.â
Will turned around and headed for the back door.
Violet sighed. âLooks like Claudia wins again.â
At the mention of Claudiaâs name, Will stopped in his tracks. âClaudia?â he asked, turning to face Jennifer and Violet. âAre you talking about Claudia
